Does this land truly have an entire day in celebration of turkeys?

....And is this Turkey Day the reason no one was at "high school" today?

[SOMEBODY DIDN'T GET THE MEMO ABOUT THE LONG WEEKEND. NINJAS DON'T HAVE HOLIDAYS OKAY.]

'Turkey Day' is not the given name of the holiday. Its rightful name is 'Thanksgiving' and it is a celebration of harvest, history, and family. On Thanksgiving, people give thanks for the things in their lives they are grateful for.

And yes, it is probably the reason no one attended your school today. Oftentimes government-run facilities are closed for major holidays.

They'll tell you it's about family and giving thanks and stuff, but it's really about eating and mindless consumerism. So, yeah, turkeys.

[ Pause. ]

Not American, I guess.

It is not uncommon for both sides to agree to a temporary truce when it comes to holidays, although I will admit that I don't think that is the case here. It is more likely that it has not been suspended due to both tradition and people requiring something positive with which to focus their attentions upon.

yuri left out a lot
ok so they tell everyone thanksgiving started bc colonists came to america and the native americans helped them out so they had a bigass feast to celebrate
but thats before they killed them all and took over
now we just use it as an excuse to overeat and be lazy
rathercommon: (oh come on)

Nobody was at the middle school either. Somebody talked a bit about what Thanksgiving was to me yesterday, though. They kept talking about the pilgrims and the Indians—oh, and some guy named Squanto! [ That's all Hime remembers, a dude named Squanto. ]

Here's a suggestion. Maybe don't try to ruin all the nice parts of the holiday for him.

[ She almost writes something reckless and stupid back at him. She can't complain about her own country to him, but...Honestly, if he thinks this place is bad, he must be spoiled absolutely rotten. ]

Did they use the feast to murder the people who were there?

Right. So everything bad that ever happened is "surely" true, and everything good gets a "not sure it happened." That's very nice.

ur obviously mad about something but i'm not getting what
are you not from a similar place maybe
you wanna know what colonists did to the native americans you can pick up a history book, pretty sure it's the same here as it is in my world
rathercommon: (are you insane)

I'm from London. And I know that they've done rotten things. I've read the history books. But reducing treatment to just "good" or "bad" makes everything completely meaningless. What bad has happened doesn't erase what's good, and what's good doesn't erase what's bad. If they want to throw a holiday to highlight what was good, then you coming along and spitting on that is cruel and idiotic.

[personal profile] immigrantpunk 2014-11-29 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not spitting on anything, i just think its better to know why ur doing things than to bury ur head in the sand
america isn't built on puppies & sunshine and thats just the truth
doesn't mean i hate thanksgiving, i'm glad i get to do something for it again
rathercommon: (oh come on)

Well, I am. So I think that's reason enough.
rathercommon: (shut it)

It's a special talent.

There's more than one way to bury your head in the sand. You can be blind to anything bad with your country and pretend that everything's fine. That's not a good thing. Believe me. I know. But it's just blindness of a different sort to pretend that there's nothing good that's ever happened. That's just as destructive for forward progress.

Well, yeah. But some days they eat more. It's a holiday for eating.

It's okay if you don't get it.
