'Turkey Day' is not the given name of the holiday. Its rightful name is 'Thanksgiving' and it is a celebration of harvest, history, and family. On Thanksgiving, people give thanks for the things in their lives they are grateful for.

And yes, it is probably the reason no one attended your school today. Oftentimes government-run facilities are closed for major holidays.

It is not uncommon for both sides to agree to a temporary truce when it comes to holidays, although I will admit that I don't think that is the case here. It is more likely that it has not been suspended due to both tradition and people requiring something positive with which to focus their attentions upon.

If there is no truce, then wouldn't it be simple for their enemies to strike while their government was openly shut down like this?

One would think so, but given the presence of imPorts throughout the country, I doubt it's really such a simple matter.

In any case, if you have concerns, it might be best to ask the officials themselves, as I cannot make certain claims on their behalf.
