[the video opens to the sound of the Thanksgiving dog show in the background and Jonathan settled contentedly on the couch, clad inexplicably in a turtleneck featuring the four Pac-Man ghosts. he smiles cheerfully.]

This isn't my holiday, but I hope that everyone who celebrates has been having a good time. I'm not entirely certain what purebred dogs have to do with being thankful, but I'm certainly grateful for the opportunity to watch them.

I never realized that dogs would be among the things that had changed in the future, but I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise. People are always looking to improve their breed however they can.

Perhaps it's a bit childish, but owning a dog again is one of the things I'm looking forward to most when I finally feel able to leave the government housing. It's been a while since I've had a pet.

[he scratches his cheek, the smile becoming a tad nostalgic for a moment of two. the television announces the start of judging for the hound group and he shakes himself out of it easily with a roll of the shoulders.]

Ah, but I hadn't meant to simply chatter away about inanities! I've been thinking about this for a bit, and I wanted to ask someone who was more experienced in the matter - how does finishing one's education work here?

There's no way I could prove my qualifications, after all, but I'd like to finally graduate if at all possible. It's the principle of the thing.

[finally completing his degree feels kind of like a symbolic closing of the worst chapter of his life, even if in Heropa that wasn't technically true. and it would give him a little more confidence in perhaps looking for a job actually related to his field of interest.]

I looked into it until I realized every major was boring, yeah.

It isn't for everyone. [something he can freely admit even to a member of his own family. although this may be because he's naively assuming Joseph has a vocation in mind that doesn't require advanced learning...]

But if something like that interests you, you ought to look into it on your own time.

Perhaps not a profitable one, but it could be one that you're passionate about. That's worth a great deal more.

[this isn't even a Victorian thing. quite the opposite, in fact. as the firstborn son and primary recipient of his father's inheritance, Jonathan should have been focusing on a profession that was both profitable and respectable.

instead he's chosen to pursue a vocation that wasn't even considered anything more than a hobby during the time, fully aware he'd never make a dime, just because he loved it. that is most definitely a Jonathan Thing.]

I'd heard that time remained frozen while we were here, but I didn't know that we couldn't alter anything upon our return. I suppose I never really thought about it.

[it's logical, he supposed, but something about that stirs up a melancholy feeling within Jonathan. if none of this would happen anywhere else, that would mean he'd return home without any memory of the precious bonds he'd forged here. it was...unfair. it's such a childish reaction, but he can't help it.

[Even if he tries to keep his voice and tone without a hint towards how he feels- Joseph knows what he's feeling. Because he feels it too. The bittersweetness of their time here is both valuable, and worth nothing, because none of them will remember it. But worst of all... Jonathan will never know these feelings for the rest of his life, outside of this place. He won't get to see his family, won't see Joseph grow, won't see he and Erina live a long happy marriage...

And it's all the more reason to never let Jonathan know of his future. It would be less painful for him to think that even if they don't know the memories that happen here, there's still the possibility of them happening in his life later on.

Joseph still can't bring himself to lie to his grandfather's face so directly though.]

Hah- anyway! What kind of dog were you gonna get? A boarhound, you said?

[Jonathan ducks his head, a little thrown by the sudden switch in topic. unlike his grandson, it takes him a moment or two to switch tracks like that. he manages it soon enough, however, typical smile returning to his face.]

I'm not entirely certain yet. It would be nice to have another boarhound, but at the same time I'd like to get to know other breeds as well.

Whatever it is, it'll very likely be large. I'm a bit biased.

Big dogs, huh? You should look into Retrievers. They're pretty big, and really popular. It's what I'd pick, if I could have a dog right now.
