S'weird, how much can change in a year. Just realized that this time last year was right about when the world started ending.

[ Which sounds, in retrospect, like a pretty stupid and overdramatic thing to say, but he can't really thing of another way to phrase it, so he goes on: ]

Or ... the City, did, anyway. The world where some of us were, before we ended up here. Things were pretty messed up for a while, but we made it out the other side.

[ Some of them did, anyway. He's aware, in a distant way, that there were more than a few casualties along the way. ]

Now I can't say I understand everything that's going on here any more than I did back in the City, or why it happens. But whatever we're up against, least it feels like something we can actually do something about. We got actual choices -- even if they're probably not as much as most of us are used to.

[ There's a pause long enough to make it seem like the recording's over, before he ends up just ... sighing. ]

Never mind. Not really sure I had a point to make -- just thinking out loud.

[ ...How awful. What an awful thing to be thinking about, and to have to remember. So even though she's direly curious about his recollections of what happened, she starts out with something a little bit nicer: ]

[ Aw, crap. One more thing he forgot, since he hasn't been using this thing much, is that people actually respond to things you post and pay attention, now. ]

[ That makes her laugh. Then she shakes her head - fat lot of good that does when they're using voice. ]

Sharing perfectly. And you're right, too. We have got power here, and the ability to make change - though I think people forget that sometimes.

Well, whatever you're thinking sounds good! Despite everything, we'll always pull through - even in the face of the apocalypse!

Yeah -- that's the idea, anyway. Never really know what you can live through until it happens.

What was it like, though? I mean, it's one thing to know about what happened before, but it's another to hear straight from someone who witnessed it...

[Ahh- that speaks to him a bit. Might not've before he came here, when he still thought- what they were doing back home was helping. But now that he knows? Now that Minato's filled him into the real situation... Yeah, whatever's happening here feels a lot different from that. Akihiko's not the type to make connections between what's happening here and the situation back there- maybe if he was he'd be less optimistic here.]

[But still- nothing could- be as bad as finding out everything you're doing for so long was only the reason things were going to get worse. To know it'd lead to one of your friends dying- led to your best friend dying... Hell, he knows as much as this guy here talking about this place- probably- but still it doesn't feel like back home.]

[Doesn't make him feel- hopeless. He hates feeling hopeless. Even in feeling it he has plans to try and change what happens back home, even though he knows he won't remember everything he's learned here, he'll keep going as he did. And the same people will die, and the world may just end- and all because of what he did, what they did.]

[No he guesses it- doesn't feel quite like that- but listening to the guy has him thinking about it.]

Yeah, a lot of the time what's happening here doesn't really measure up. But that still doesn't mean I'm about to relax. If it feels like we can do something here then we have to try to.

Yeah. I mean, some people feel like it doesn't really matter -- we could all be Ported out tomorrow, go back home and not remember any of this. Nothing's gonna change that.

[ Hell, he'd experienced it himself, and seen others who didn't have any recollection of him show up again. ]

But it'll drive you crazy, thinking like that.

That everything you do here doesn't matter? Yeah, there's not point in that either. You might forget everything but why drag yourself down while you're stuck here? Dwelling on things never help anything and if you consider it a waste of time, the same could be said for both.

So you might as well keep yourself busy.

[A breath, pausing for a moment. While he can sympathize with being angry at all your hard work lost- doing nothing just- isn't going to work for him.]

Good to know there's others who won't let futility win out.

Hard to believe it's really been that long. [ says the man who missed the apocalypse. ] You doing alright, Rick?

Yeah, I'm fine. It's just... weird.

[ A pause, and then with a touch of guilt: ]

Sorry about losing Baskerville.

Yeah, I feel you on that.

[ but it takes john a moment to reconcile the name with the animal instead of the facility. oops. ]

It's fine. Casualties were bound to happen and, at the end of the day, all that matters is that you got yourself out in one piece.

[ Unlike some people who lost their sanity about 10 years back. Who actually do. ]

The City didn't come with mandatory tattoos and little robots swimming around in my bloodstream, Mitch. So yeah, I kinda miss it.

Yeah, I guess it didn't.

It was a hell of a lot more dangerous there, though.

[ She was in the City longer than he was. She's got more reason to have it on her mind. ]

I'm not sure there's many people who want to think about it — if they remember it.

From what I could tell, yeah. I ain't exactly an expert, so take that with a grain of salt.

What was it like there? In the City? Was it different?

Depends on what you mean by different. [ He pauses. ] It was a lot more like back home, in a lot of ways. A lot of the places were the same. Cars stayed on the ground.

But there were Porters there, too. And I got the same powers then that I do here.
