As for Karen, she's seated on her bed in her shared housing complex. Next to her bedside, on the small dresser, is a tall iced cappuccino that's already a quarter finished. Most of her hair is tied up and she's dressed in a camisole and three quarter pants, but interesting there's a light sweater laying near the edge of the bed.

It's much too warm for long sleeves. ]

Probably a bit weird to ask, but how many of you are going to the jobs they set up for us? I can't exactly complain about doing work I know how to do and being able to earn money ASAP, but it still feels a bit like a demotion. I liked the view from my office window.

[ She sighs and scratches above the digital tattoo on her wrist. ]

Ugh... and I don't suppose someone's found a way to get rid of this?

Working with software again. It's been a long time since I've been hands on at work, though I was basically unemployed in the City. All that drama that went down was right in the middle of meetings I was setting up.

Figure I might as well. It ain't a bad job -- an' it beats waitressin' anyway. They give y'somethin' y'don't like?

Hardly, just a job I started off with years ago. Not to brag, but I was CEO of my own company before I was in the City.

But I need the money. Don't have many clothes yet and have to buy more food for the cat. Also a vet check-up at some point for him... who knows what dimensional travel does to the little guys.

What are you doing?

I'm modelin'. Like that ain't ridiculous at my age.

But hell, hon, I'd brag if I had my own damn company. Guess I wouldn't want t'downgrade either. Y'figure y'can work back up to it?

I say if you've got it, flaunt it.

[ A thoughtful pause. ]

Not too sure. I'm still trying to get a feel of this place. I noticed a lot of businesses are family owned and local.

"Salon assistant." [ you can hear the air quotes. ] Right now, that means washing other people's hair.

But it's not even close to what you were doing or wanted to do in the City?

[ Rather fortunate that she's been blessed with a good job, Rin won't boast out loud about it. ]

It doesn't seem that rude of a request to make.

I'm not registered, so I'll have to look on my own. I'm fine at the moment where I am, though.

Did you have reason to suspect doing so wouldn't be a benefit?

[ She pulls her legs closer, adjusting her position on the bed. ]

Nope and I've got no plans to.

Who knows what they'll ask from us if we're registered. I'm all for helping people, but not without any say in it. The tattoos, being told where we can and can't go? That doesn't spell anything good.

Too bad we can't ask doctors to remove it. I don't like the idea of being tagged like some farm animal.

Me neither, and it's worse for people like me. I'm something of a techie, but, having foreign technology in my body doesn't settle well. The temptation to remove the tattoo is pretty high.

[ And it doesn't help that he already has nanites in his blood. It's not really settling well. ]

Anyway, they have me doing R&D for electronic entertainment. Not too different to what I was doing before, just not putting as much money in my pockets. Where did they send you?
