Video -- Press Conference (Back dated to the 8th)

[Unlike his previous videos on the network that had a far more personal touch, this time the video cuts in as if it's piggybacking off of feed from a local Native news station. After a moment he makes his way into the shot, sporting his stark black suit with a red tie and take his place at the podium amidst a series of camera flashes.]

Good evening Citizens of these United States, and my import compatriots. I'd like to start off this evening by announcing that I'm running for President.

[There's a moment of stunned silence as Revan taps a couple of cue cards on the podium, seeming to look up from his position with a passive look. As if on cue, as the comment registers, there's a sudden crescendo of gasps and even a few cries of disbelief.

To which Revan quickly raises his hands, chuckling.]

Joking! Just joking. ...It's far to early for that. [He offers a suggestive pique of his brow. And in response there's a polite, but definitely tense bout of laughter.]

But now that I have your attention, I'm here to make a few announcements regarding the well being of Maurtia Falls and my plans going forward. Real announcements.

The first is of a more personal nature. As some might be aware, aside from being the Ambassador of Maurtia Falls' Import population, I am also the owner of Malachor Industries, a company that is committed to providing the world with tailored import creations. Such as what I am about to show you now.

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you: Bacta.

[From within his breast pocket he pulls out a small vial, containing a glowing blue liquid which the camera zooms in on closely.]

Bacta is a synthetic compound made from symbiotic bacteria that promotes rapid tissue regeneration in any host its introduced to. It's capable of healing most wounds at a fraction of the bodies normal healing rate. And soon I'll be putting it on the market. But before that, I need some volunteers to test the product before I make it available for public consumption.

There is virtually no risk involved. To all those interested, they will receive free treatments of Bacta for a week to see if there are any side effects. After that small quantities will be made available upon special order until I have a steady enough supply for the wider market.

[Putting the vial away, Revan comes to square himself back against the podium, as if bracing himself for his next announcement.]

As for my second and final announcement for today: As you are aware, it is the Ambassador's responsibility to hear the needs of his constituents and act towards their betterment. The Government as offered us a direct avenue to process these needs officially in the form of Bills. You may have heard some of the other great bills that have passed recently due to the dedication of our other Ambassadors and those that support them.

I too have submitted a bill to congress. It has been met with some criticism, and it was the topic of much consideration. But I have finally received word from our gracious hosts that we are permitted to move forward.

After sitting down with several imports and discussing matters of personal importance, I've quickly come to realize that there is a strong sentiment of hopelessness within our community. Each person spoke on how they felt helpless within their own city, like they had no real foundation from which to start a comfortable life. Some imports have tried in the past to provide some sense of aid and stability: offering funds or career counseling to help with the awkward transition that many imports face upon arriving here.

But do to the inherent ephemeral nature of the import existence, many of these services have gone the way of their creators, simply vanishing into obscurity. But with your help, I plan to create an import service station in Maurtia Falls, that will act as a nexus, a foundation for the import infrastructure for the days ahead. Here, these services can be brought together, made official in the eyes of the community. And should an import, whom has worked so hard to provide for their peers, port out, the service will remain behind for another enterprising import to pick up again.

I have also requested that this all be done without government oversight.

[There's a sudden murmur of hushed whispers from the crowd, but Revan continues, as if fully expecting it.]

Many have spoken out that they feel there is nothing of this world that they can truly call their own. I have stood my ground on this and won the right for imports to accept jurisdictional responsibility for these premises themselves, with all the benefits and repercussions inherent to such an arrangement.

With your help, we can take the imports from being castaways, lost in the multidimensional drift and become the community we all seek.

I'll be taking question from both those here and the ones watching. [He nods to the camera, as if signaling that should you wish to respond, he'll know.]

Bacta? Sounds. Pretty impressive. I'll check it out. I get into enough spars and fights I'd probably be a decent test for it.

[As much as he's sure she likes taking care of him, the less pressure on Winry with healing him and tending to his arm, the better.]

Excellent! Being an import usually comes with it's fair share of bumps and bruises. During the trial you'll see a marked improvement in recovery time.

I'm guessing it'll be administered on site? At least, during testing when you'd want to monitor us more to be sure it is safe. I just figure if this does take off it could really help. My...girlfriend can heal but I don't want to overwork her all the time.

Indeed. To be safe, all volunteers will be under observation for a short time after the Bacta is administered. In the the unlikely event of an allergic reaction help will be close at hand.

But I'm sure your girlfriend will thank you for the reprieve. And the knowledge that due to your increased healing, that you are safer.

I don't think there's anything I'm allergic to, but I get it, yeah.

What I figure though. I figure she would appreciate it in this way I give her a bit of a break from it at least. Perhaps not necessarily safer, but less injured in the aftermath of sparring or fights at least.

That's good to hear. It is a very rare response too. In my universe there was a large diversity of alien species that lived together. And with the greater number of genepools came a greater risk that SOMEONE might have a bad reaction.

Which is the only reason I even mention it.

Right. No kidding when you have this many...variables to consider and check on, even here with imPorts from all over and different times that might not yet have been exposed to some medicines to know if they might be allergic. I guess I hadn't thought much on that until now. But then I'm not a doctor or anything like that so.

I'm looking to create a few storage tanks for the bacta, but I'm afraid my usual process might take some time. I had the pleasure of witnessing your abilities during our time together in Alaska. Might we be able to work out an arrangement?

With your help I could speed up my timeline significantly, getting bacta on the market sooner.

Yeah, more or less. I mean, as part of alchemy research I've looked into biology and such anyway.

[Though the fact he's actually used said knowledge to attempt Human Transmutation is still something he's told barely anyone here, of course. That's not the point here, anyway. Ed tilts his head slightly, considering.]

Hm. Well, provided we figure the materials. Any specifics on what the tanks would need to be made from? Once we have that sorted and have the materials needed I could do it easily enough.

The design is simple, and I could handle all technical aspects. I just have limited resources, and the time and effort it would take to make the storage containers alone is exponentially slower than your alchemy.

I can have all the raw materials available to you, as well as a blueprint of what I'll need. If interested, I could provide you the elemental composition for some materials from my universe I'd like to use. Some of them might seem... revolutionary in this world.

[How else do you bribe someone who can have whatever they want with the clap of their hands, other than knowledge?]

I get it. The sooner we get this going, the sooner this stuff could be out there a lot quicker and easier. Not seeing any downside here. This can be my way to pay you back for letting me in on this earlier. I'll see what I can do. Just let me know when and where to meet to set these up.

I am fortunate to know such a generous person. Please, stop by my warehouse in De Chima when you can, and I'll show you what I have in mind. I have a prototype right now which we can base our work.

What do you intend to do in the event that your product actually causes your test subjects physical harm?

The very nature of bacta is healing, not harm. But should anyone develop any unforeseen side effects, I will ensure they receive immediate and appropriate care.

The "very nature" of a lot of things might be primarily beneficial, but they still do clinical trials for a reason. And even then... There have been lawsuits over Tylenol, and that's over the counter pain medication.

[Revan nods, accepting the point.]

You're completely right. And if Bacta was something innovative to me I would likely insist on a longer trial period. But it has already seen widespread use in my universe, across many different species. With negligible negative effects. But the nature of imports is diversity, which is why I wish to test it amongst our peers first.

The risk, what little there might be, is far outweighed by the potential benefits, wouldn't you agree?

I'm a lawyer. It's not my job to agree. It's my job to point out risk, and I think I'd hate if someone showed up in my office wanting to sue another imPort for something.

Which is why I'm hoping you've got some kind of fair contract involved here.

And I appreciate your position. I'd rather this endeavor remains a positive experience But what exactly would you like me to offer at this time?

If, in the event of testing one of the participants suffers injury or illness as a result of their exposure to bacta, I would be willing to negotiate compensation for treatment. Is that what you had in mind?

Something like that would be a good start, yes.

[ It's not just that he doesn't want to sue an imPort (although he would, and it's a touchy subject, given the forced medical procedure he'd just undergone back home.) But none of them can afford any more bad press or failures, either. ]

Of course. Such was already my intention. However, if something more formal would ease your mind, I would be open to you drafting a simple contract in favor of whoever volunteers for testing.

Well, now I just feel like an ambulance chaser. That wasn't my intention.

Nonsense. You are my peer, expressing concern based on your own unique set of talents. That's nothing to be wary or abashed about.

Besides, I have no idea what an ambulance chaser is anyways. I doubt you mean it literally, at least.

Ambulance chasers are lawyers who actively target people who've been injured in some way, accident victims, in order to encourage them to sue. It's predatory and in poor taste.

Question! That Bacta stuff, is it administered on-site or will the volunteers be responsible for self-administration? [because he wants to get his hands on that stuff but not after it's been in his body]

All participants will be allowed to select their method of application, which will be given on-site, yes.

Ahhh. [damn] Well, I'd volunteer but I don't think it'd agree with me. I was just curious.

Oh? I assure you Bacta has been a tried and true source of healing across my home galaxy, by a number of species. Why would you be at a higher risk?

No no, not a risk; I have a hyper-accelerated metabolism so I heal really fast anyway. I'll screw up your averages.

That's a fair point. However, even the input of such an extreme outlier as yourself could prove helpful. What if I have someone with a condition similar to yours that needs medical attention? Knowing for certain the effects and limitation of Bacta is just as important as knowing its benefits.

Mmmmmmmmaybe, but I wanna see the components for it. Not too cool with something going in my body when I don't know what it is.

I could provide you with some materials regarding it's composition if you'd like. It's all mostly mundane suspension fluids, except the bacteria itself.

...And I don't wish to make assumptions here, but it would take someone with an eye for biochemistry to even understand what they're seeing.

[In fact, Revan himself wouldn't have been able to undertake this project if it wasn't for the help of more knowledgeable import support.]

They're entirely of alien origin.

Just how quickly does it work? [Closing wounds is one of the only things she can't accomplish with her magic. This could be of great use.]

Bacta speeds the cells' natural regenerative process. I don't have a hard number, but I would say by at least a factor of five?

Hard to say, as it depends on the severity of the wound.

Let's say something bloody but non-lethal.

[He pauses, contemplating. It was still a hard question to answer, but maybe an example would help.]

Lets say a moderate laceration, such as one might receive from a short blade. With direct Bacta infusion, I'd say the wound would close in a matter of a couple days. And be healed completely in no more than a couple weeks. With limited to no visible scarring.

Again, with allowances for varying severity.

[Damn, not as good as she'd hoped. Better than leaving things to heal on their own, but it sounds more...cosmetic than what she's been lusting after. Of course, it would be too much to hope for a product that would truly mimic the healing factor some imPorts have.]

So nothing flashy. What about the lost blood? Will it regenerate faster too?

I'm sorry to disappoint. However I'm sure those that cut their recovery from months to days will still find it adequate.

[His tone is still light, playful even.]

Unfortunately, bacta's targeted use is currently tissue regeneration. It will not be able to treat severe blood loss. Only stem it.
