[There's a certain anonymity in text. A certain kind of power.
Invisibility affords safety and security, yet enables the greatest cruelty. It offers the individual the chance to be sucked into the swirling whirlpool; that spiral pathway to the state of consciousness called the group mind. And at the heart of that mind is fear.
Fear is the first and greatest teacher anyone can have, he knows. How people could begin to understand the world without developing their exploration of fear, he had no idea. A child without fear of their parents is a child without an awareness of danger. Parents insure their children against failure by making them terrified of a lack of success - of being worthless in their eyes. The first lesson begins with parents, yes.
He hadn't known his parents. He'd lived with his Granny, who'd taught him to see fear was everything and nothing. It was power and control. It was empty and meaningless.
Mothering Sunday. Father's Day. Parents' Day. Today being what it is, he will help people see the truth. Should they choose to close their eyes, he'll force them open.]
Fear is the greatest enemy; the father and mother of suffering.
You set aside a holiday in which you convince yourselves you love, respect and admire your parents because you fear that you don't care. They grow old, yet you can't wait for them to die.
You give or receive gifts, but none of you are willing to focus on the motivation behind this day. You buy parental approval to avoid being called a failure. You buy cards because you fear voicing questions. You buy into the dream that keeps you an eternal child because you fear the day that comes when you will eclipse their presence.
The religious amongst you fear the Lord; the Father of all. Some of you revere Mary, the Mother of God.
But you are all terrified, frightened children. Scared of the truth. You will never win the approval you crave. You will one day be alone. You will be told you should never have been born. So you celebrate to forget. Except you forget that without a child, both Father's Day and Mother's Day are meaningless. What about the millions of children who have no father or mother?
Why do you lie to yourselves? Why do you celebrate at all?

Consider heliotropy. Plants turn towards the sun to maximise photosynthesis; a response to the stimulus of light. Humanity acts in the present based on perceptions of the future; the brighter their vision, the stronger the acts of development. We learned how to control fire and in light of that understanding, our lives became less about hard survival and we began to see things as acts of leisure. Flames thus became attractive to us. But our sensitivity to heat is innate and never been overcome. The orange and yellow lights lure us in, but the choking warmth keeps us away. Humans draw close to fire to assess its degrees of benefit in keeping us alive, and we back away when we have learned it's value.
Fire also banishes darkness. Humans invest it with talismanic power for that reason. But think of the panic we feel for a split-second when we see flames on the horizon. The fire, at that moment, becomes part of our fear of the unknown! It's all rather fascinating, really...
oh damn shits getting DEEP
I think fire on the horizon still ties into the fear of the unknown; is it a forest fire? Is it other humans? I find it interesting that humans are so scared of other humans! And most violence between humans is fear based, I think!
What came first, I wonder? Violence between humans, or fear of other humans??
Compounding on our exploration of the unknown, I think that the fear came first, because unlike animals, every human brain is unique with unique experiences, right?? So every interaction with a strange human being is mysterious and potentially catastrophic!!! Especially when faced with humans from DRASTICALLY different circumstances, from different geographies with different language and superficial differences.
Crane can talk shop all night.
Fear is the oldest and most powerful of emotions. Whether or not people believe in its power isn't my problem. It simply is, and all humans will learn to stand and face it, eventually. Those who roll over and let themselves die know their fault is their own. They've been warned all their lives.
Do you speak from the point of view of a human? Your mind is a fascinating one, but it doesn't fit human patterns of speech and behaviour.

Something you just said is interesting though - 'those who roll over and let themselves die' what does that mean exactly?
[ search (roll over and die): Give up easily without a fight. To loose all will to continue on. ]
Are you condemning humans who commit suicide? Or is that in reference to humans who succumb to disease??

[Like Chilton's flight. Rather than submit himself to his own institution, he'd gone on the run.]
Does that answer satisfy you?

Wow, this was really hard to wrap your head around without understanding fear as an emotion. 'Say hello' to fear instead of 'pushing it away'??? It was metaphors stacked on top of euphemisms!!
It seems like most of the advice was just about detaching yourself from irrational phobias, or realizing that the fears were insignificant or easily rationalized out of; this seemed more like 'neutralizing' fear, rather than 'accepting' it. ]
I think your choice of words is kind of arbitrary and confusing.

By contrast, I might comment that your understanding is limited. But that would be rude.
[Because he's such a PLEASANT man, that helpful Dr. Crane.]

What other actions can you take besides succumb or suppress?

We can embrace fear and be all that we can be. Or we can crucify it and make it our scapegoat.

I'm pretty sure you're 'trolling' me at this point, right??

[ More weird linguistic constructs!! Tachikoma was going to have to brush up on this stuff if she wanted to continue this conversation.
