VOICE || Terran calendars 101

Okay. [ There's no preamble, no introduction. Just Rocket's unmistakable voice, sounding as irritated as ever. ] I thought I had a pretty good handle on the way you Terrans did your calendar. Earth rotates around its axis: day. Earth rotates around the sun: year. Pretty standard. All the stuff in between is chopped up inta arbitrary "months" that don't make much sense, but hey, ya stick on every wall and on the communicators so at least I can kinda keep track.

It ain't perfect. Kind of annoying, but I don't expect a whole lot from you Terrans anyway.

That said, how the hell did I end up missin' a month and a half?

Last I looked it was all trees and snow and... "kris-mas". [ The air quotes are practically audible. ] Now it's all red and pink and... and kinda an assault on the senses, honestly. What is with you people? Somebody fill me in here.

[ There's a bit of a pause, and he seems to be ending it there. Until, as an afterthought, he adds: ]

Quill, you better still have my stuff or I'm gonna kick your ass.

I forgot about those things. Why did you remind me?

[dramaking]

I'd hoped their purpose might be penetrable [heh] to someone else.

You're not from Earth.

[It's phrased like a statement, rather than a question, but there is a question implied.]

Okay, first of all, don't use the word "penetrable" in reference to those things ever again.

Second of all, what gave me away?

[dramaking]

[There's a pause. Is this what has been described to him as sarcasm?]

You spoke of Terrans as if you were not one of them.

[kicksomegrass]

I don't think Terrans actually call themselves "Terrans" anyway. But you're right, I'm not.

[dramaking]

They call themselves that on sci-fi television.

[That's...really not important right now.]

Are you from another planet or another dimension?

[kicksomegrass]

Definitely the first one, probably the second one too. This place is weird like that.

[dramaking]

Then we are not very similar after all. Still, I'm glad to know there are others who find human habits confusing.

[kicksomegrass]

Terrans have always been a little backwards, if ya ask me.

So, I'm guessin' you're from another dimension or something?

[dramaking]

They certainly make little sense.

[There's a pause, as he figures out how to describe this.]

I was from a place called Mojoworld, where I was a gladiator, before escaping to an alternate version of this planet. So, in a way, I am from several other dimensions.

[kicksomegrass]

Yeah? How'd you hop dimensions in the first place? [ and is it something he can replicate? Please, oh please... ]

[dramaking]

I have the ability to teleport, but it's risky unless I have someone I'm connected with to envision my destination for me. Unfortunately, no such person seems to be here. From what I can tell there seem to be measures in place to prevent such an easy escape from this dimension anyway.

[A pause.]

Sorry to disappoint.

Damn. I was hoping for a machine or somethin’. Worth a shot, anyway.

But that just begs the question, is the Porter blockin’ the way out, or the government?

[dramaking]

Most here claim it's the former. I'm inclined to doubt it. People are too trusting of the government for my taste.

Rumor has it that things are startin’ to ramp up around here, so I’m extra inclined not to trust the government.

[dramaking]

I have heard similar. Though, in my experience, it's healthier not to trust anyone until they prove themselves worthy of it.
