iamtetsuo: (manga - vulture)

007 - Video (possible acrophobia description warning)

[The feed clicks on to an extremely high view, focused partly on Tetsuo's face, the wind blowing his white hair erratically around. He's perched vulturelike on the support structures of one of the taller buildings in downtown Nonah, above the top floor, waiting for the wind to die down enough for him to talk.

And that's not even what he's here to talk about. Both hands are visible, and the camera is held very still; he's either got it perched on something or is holding it up with his powers.]

So, I've been thinking... We're all made out of elements and stuff, right? Carbon, nitrogen and water, things like that. All that boring shit they make you learn about in school.

[Apparently water's an element now. He pauses.]

But that's what I don't get. Ever since I really started to think about it... I keep coming back to it, you know? How we're all made out of a small list of ingredients...

[Sorry to anyone with a fear of heights - he reaches out to tap the comm and the camera moves dizzyingly downwards, providing a nice scene of lower building roofs, cars no larger than colorful beads, some trees... It pans out out to give a dramatic view of the rest of Nonah as he continues.]

But that same list makes all of this, too! What's the difference? How's something alive the same as stuff that can't be?

I... this is tricky, buddy.

Carbon.

[Don't as how he knows that, Tetsuo. He doesn't even know where that came from either.]

I think Carbon's what makes it alive or not--what are you even doing up there? Taking up job as city's daredevil?

[Are you just going to not address that you spouted science, Kaneda?]

You might as well ask why apples and oranges are different even if they're fruits, you know.

It's not really what it's made of, but what those things combine to be. The human body functions as a single organism, but inside are many systems that run it. It's the combination, I suppose. And the existence of a consciousness, but that's still a running debate.

There's a lottery system.

I try not to think about it unless it's for some science exam.

Wait, are you on top of a building?

[Well that... sure is a weird question to wonder about where Tetsuo is right now, although at this point Perry figures he should be used with Tetsuo kind being a little weird in his own way.]

Evolution plays a major part in it, but it's really not an easy question to answer.

Really I don't know if there even is an answer beyond just "evolution".

Water's a compound, not an element. It's made of elements, like we are.

You're in good company, there. Philosophers have been asking that question for centuries upon centuries.

You know, a lottery? You get a number and they call them in a random order?

Hmmm....

[He puts his feet on the table, rocking the chair on its hind legs.]

Guess it's just a different...[He snaps his fingers, trying to think of the word.] List of things?

[That doesn't sound right.]

Like...like a recipe!

It's... not the building blocks. Things that are alive... they're made up of electrical impulses, and thoughts. We're controlled by our brains, which generate most of what makes us... us.
hypnotherapy: ([h] is that all?)

Humans have always wanted concrete confirmation of a soul. [ It's not a problem for him, though. He already knows. ] Proving for good the existence - or nonexistence, in some cases- of that extra spark that gives them consciousness and makes them who they are.

I have no opinion on it, myself, but I suppose I'm an exception in that I already know. But you're certainly not the first one to be troubled by the fact that everything's made out of smaller components, including yourself.

What kind of stuff were you talking about?
rassera: (Explain this to me)

[personal profile] rassera 2016-05-20 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...like...eggs. They're in cake, but they're also in tamagoyaki.

Two separate things, same ingredient. A lot of recipes use eggs...

But they're all different, you know?

I don't know what exactly you're going on about but...maybe those element things are just...the right mix of em.

Oh, what, now you fucking know everything? And here I was trying to actually be fucking nice for once...serves me fucking right, I guess.
