[ For those familiar with his face, Shepard seems ... younger, somehow. Not by much, but there are fewer lines creasing his forehead and the corners of his eyes. His posture's slightly different, too, shoulders squared and spine straight even as he almost hums with alertness. ]

I'm Commander Shepard. I've been told I've been here before, but apparently I'm missing a few things. I don't recognize most of the faces on this network.

[ His voice is scratchy, hoarse from use -- or lack of it? He's had the time to go through his communicator record -- lucky it wasn't locked -- and what he's seen has mostly added to his growing confusion. Although he conceals it well, the frustration with the inability to understand what's happening grates on him. ]

Am I the only one having issues with memory loss? Is this something that happens a lot here?

[ He crosses his arms, unconsciously. ]

No. I...shot him? [ A Pause. ] He...betrayed us. Well, all of humanity, really.

Kaidan ...

[ He does pinch the bridge of his nose, now. ]

Sorry -- I'm trying not to -- mess things up?

He...was a Cerberus agent. In the end.

[ Shepard makes a soft, surprised noise. ]

Cerberus? Those -- [ He bites back the swears, but only just, and finally shakes his head. ]

Future's looking less and less like somewhere I want to go back to.

It has it's moments, promise.

[ A half-fond smile. He's thinking about Shepard tbh. ]

There are some rough moments. Cerberus is one of the low points. But... it's worth it, to deal with that, if you're around.

[ What's he supposed to do with that smile, Kaidan ... ]

Well. It's good to know you still have my back.

I, ah, always have your back, Shepard.

[ FUCK. ]

Er -- You know what I mean by that.

[ Okay, Shepard can't help laughing. And ribbing Kaidan a little bit, because if he can laugh about this, maybe it'll be easier to deal with. ]

I'm guessing smooth-talking isn't how we ended up together, huh?

Hey, come on, Shepard.

[ He says, half embarrassed, and half teasing, himself. ]

I think we're both a little deficient in that department.

Now that's just rude. I can be persuasive when I want to be.

Yeah.

You can be. I feel like I can say I've seen both sides of you.

Considering the way we woke up, I'd say you've seen all sides of me.

[ He keeps a straight face through that. Mostly. ]

[ He goes a little red. ]

Obviously not.

Sorry about putting you out of the bed. You didn't have to sleep on the couch, you know.
