Everyone knows. Not everyone believes, or cares, but it's not like it's some secret.



Every 90 years, twelve gods reincarnate. They- we, it's not like we go wage wars, or fight monsters or whatever. But we change things. We change people. We change human history. And then two years later . . .


[ She clicks her fingers again, and what's left of her cigarette, butt and all, crumbles to dust. ]

Two years? Every ninety years?

That's crazy.

[ She snorts humorlessly. ]


Works great for birth control.

Gods find a way. Trust me.

[pummelgranite]

Then maybe the worlds just better fucking off without us. Who knows.

... Could be that too. Mortals aren't so great either, though.

Uh huh. You're not wrong.

So what's that even leave?

[ Shrugs and pulled out another cigarette. ]


Zewelleger seems pretty cool.

People are nicer after they're dead.

[ Just gives them both kind of a lopsided wry smile. ]

[ He smiles shyly back. And gets up from where he was sitting. ]

You wanna get some food? I know a shortcut.

I don't eat much anymore, but let's see your shortcut.

[abandon_hope]

Right. C'mon then.

[ He holds his hand out for hers. ]

[pummelgranite]

[ She takes his hand without hesitation. Hers is cool, if not as corpse-cold as his own, but there's a buzz to it- power that won't be contained by flesh. Not for long. Like a static charge, raising the hair on the back of his neck. ]

[abandon_hope]

[ Maybe she really is a god after all, then. He shivers instinctively, then concentrates on what he set out to do in the first place. ]

Whatever you do, don't let go.

[ The two of them melt into the shadows. It's a lot like being on a roller coaster in pitch blackness, except with no safety rail to keep you in place. She'd better hold on. ]

[ OH THAT IS THE GOOD SHIT, dangerous and infinite. It feels like it could swallow her whole- song, and flesh, and pain. Crack her open and empty her out, dilute the plasma inside her head down to nothing. She wraps her arms around his shoulders and laughs her delight in his ear. ]

[abandon_hope]

[ That might be the first time he's gotten that reaction. He can't help but smile a little bit more in the darkness. Soon enough, though, they're stumbling back into reality behind a local McRonalds. ]

Shadow travel.

[pummelgranite]

[ Her eyes are a solid black, and there's something sharp and vicious about her smile. But after a moment she lets out a long breath and pushes back her hair. ]


Shadows, huh? Not bad. We can take the dirt next time.

You do that trick too?

[ He staggers a bit, having to lean against the wall to get his breath back. ]

Uh huh. Pretty much all the Chthonics have some way to move around underground. Shadows is more Baph's thing, though.

[ He waves a hand. ]

I'm fine. It's just draining.
