Judging by the sweat visible on his arms, he just finished his exercise for the morning. His ramrod-straight posture projects an image of Official Business that doesn't match his casual tone of voice, or his workout clothes.]

Hey, everyone. I'm Jacob Taylor. I work with RISE: that's an imPort police team, for all you new arrivals out there. I'm putting together something new for the community... kind of a public safety resource. Like the FAQ, but focused on who's causing trouble these days.

So I thought I'd ask: what do you think are the biggest threats around here? Criminals, terrorists, the Soviets? Maybe there's something most of us haven't heard about yet that more people need to know about. It's important to be aware, especially when people might want you dead. There's always something happening under the surface around here.

Oh, and just so we're clear: this is going to be a list focusing on groups, not individual people. So don't bother talking about who your least favourite imPorts are.

[He pauses for a moment, then relaxes his posture as he segues into more civilian matters.]

Yeah, but they're also Porting in and out all the time, or getting declared 'reformed' after probation. Or they're like Lucifer, and they've never been convicted of a crime even though everyone knows they're bad.

Basically, if the list focused on imPort criminals, it would be out of date within a week. Or it would get us sued. Maybe both.

Be kinda neat to see the court system try and deal with one of us for something that wasn't fucking mass murder, honestly...

Sounds like you need one of those self-editing spreadsheets. Keep things recent and tidy without ever having to put all that shit in yourself.

I can tell you from experience that it's not much better when they're trying you for "illegal vigilantism" either.

I'd love to have some self-editing software. I actually didn't know that was an option in this century. Don't suppose you've got any brands you could recommend?

I dunno, still think someone's gonna have to go in for tax fraud before we can really do a decent comparison.

I can't give you a fucking brand or anything, but there's some free shit that comes with an email service that's pretty alright. Never seen anyone fuck it up too bad, anyway.

Well now I'm curious too. I'll see if RISE can arrest someone for white-collar stuff when we're not worried about terrorists and and serial killers.

But anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll look up stuff that comes in e-mail packages. I never thought I'd have to worry about office tools as a field agent, but here I am, I guess.

It's been a while sine something exploded, right? Sounds like now's as good a fucking time as any.

I'm starting to think that 'the dumber the shit is the more important it's gonna be' is just some kind of universal law at this point. Easier to just roll with it.

You'd think this would be a good time, but things are kind of on pause for us while we wait for the inquiry to wrap up. We don't know what RISE is going to look like once the recommendations get released. A lot could change for us.

That sounds like a good rule of thumb, though. I'm going to keep that in mind. I'll make sure to credit you if I end up using it.

Yeah. I've spent enough time in court already. I don't need that kind of headache over a citation.

But if I were you, I'd care more about what happens to RISE. Things could get worse around here if the team doesn't work out. There's a lot at stake.

Not for me there isn't. I don't get along with half the fuckers in it, and it's not like the shit ever stops flying around here anyway. If it stays or not, it's pretty much all the same to me.

I work with those fuckers, and I've got a lot of respect for them. They're the ones who stand up to CATCH the shit.

Doubt it. People like that don't change - if shit ever really comes my way, I know they're not gonna stick their neck out for me.

But man, it's whatever in the end. There's enough imPorts around that it doesn't really make much of a difference.

Hazel, if you're ever in danger, I promise I'll do whatever I can to be there. It's my duty, and not just as a RISE member.

I know we don't know each other well, but I hope you believe me. I take my promises seriously.

People who don't know me are pretty much the only ones I ever believe when it comes to that shit. Not that you won't be completely pissing away your time, but it's not like you know any better yet.
