[He cuts off with a pained sound. His breathing sounds strained, and there's a soft thump. Then he keeps growling into the comm.]

Tetsuo. [Sabriel's tone has that odd, carefully restrained quality it often takes on when she wants to start shouting but is stopping herself.]

You were just Ported back in. I understand that's... Disorienting, but the government probably isn't responsible. Just the Porter.

[There's a pause before a reply. There's something he ought to know here, about the Porter. He's been told things about that before. All that common sense and memory is relegated to a nagging feeling at the back of his skull that the fire in his head drowns out.]

They still use the damn thing, don't they?!

They study it. They've learned from it enough to make the inter-city Porters. But they can't make people port in or out of this world. That's beyond their power.

Yes, they will. It's irreplaceable, and no one knows the consequences of breaking it- it could strand us here, send us all home, or put us... wherever you went when you were ported out this time.
