He leans in close to the camera and in a conspiratorial, hushed voice, with a glance behind him to see if the man he's referring to is anywhere nearby]


Hey.

So. Hermann won't let me use this to advertise our wedding, but I'm letting you all know you're invited. Sorry for the totally short notice, but this world being what it is, we didn't want to jinx ourselves by planning too far in advance.

March 27th. Anchorage, Alaska. 4:30 pm -- Anchorage time. We're making plans to have transportation via teleportation provided and reception will follow.

Uh, if you can, RSVP or something, just so we know how many of you to expect. Not that I'd mind performing to a packed house, but you know. A headcount is always good.

You'll have to give me some leeway. This is the first bachelor's party I've ever attended, let alone planned.

It was more of a... city-wide hatching day celebration that coincided with when the females wanted to declare their mates.

[He gives Newt a Look, but he's also laughing.]

No, no, a celebration of the females' hatching day. We call it the Day of Hope.

Oh! of their day of hatching? Like a birthday? Wait, so there's sort of a bachelorette party, but no bachelor party? That bites.

Not all females wait until the Day of Hope to make their claims. Two of my daughters didn't, in fact.

How do they claim their mate? I kind of always got the feeling you just declared "you, me, forever" but what goes along with claiming someone?

[governorkang]

Nothing fancy. It's just publicly declaring that this person is their mate.

[A pause.]

Sort of like that one website when someone states they are "in a relationship". And just like that, it doesn't mean forever. It's for as long as the female wants to keep that male around.

Huh, so you're at her mercy for that. What if a male wants out before his female has unclaimed him?

Though you gave me a great idea. I just need to find a Facebook equivalent to change my status on.

Then they discuss it.

[Duh. Isn't that what you're supposed to do in relationships? Communicate?]

Well YEAH, I get THAT. I mean, is he allowed a divorce if she still wants to claim him?

No female would ever do that.

Draconians, of either gender, are better people than humans, then. ...Now--uh, before you start side-eyeing me, though, let me just put this out there: I've already told Hermann that if he tries to divorce me, I'm dragging him to marriage counseling. So. Yeah. I'm with you on the talking it out thing. I mean, don't think I'm not going to let him out of the claim even if I want to keep him, though.

[He almost starts laughing, and barely keeps a straight face. Kang's one of the nicer draconians, and he hasn't bothered to lie or hide his past or what he is.]

I know you better than that.

Marriage just seems messy and complicated. There's so much paperwork, and legalities.

Yeah, Western society likes its damn paperwork and legalities.

But you know, there was a time not at all long ago in my world that I wouldn't have been able to legally consider myself Hermann's. So maybe making it official in the eyes of the law is kind of a thing worth doing while we're busy making our own claims and promises to each other.
