Good morning, everyone.

Although I know that there is a great diversity of cultures from the world of my origin, my knowledge of each one of them is woefully slim. What kinds of food people eat and why...what they wear and what it means to them...and perhaps the most peculiar: spirituality and religion. Since we live in a world where people are brought in from other universes, our diversity is even greater.

So I ask you, fellow imPorts: What kind of culture do you come from? What parts of it mean the most to you, and what about it would you change if you could?

The culture I come from is vastly different to this one already, so any I would change don't really exist here. [ like intergalactic conquest, or trying to kill her pseudo brother at birth. ] The parts I'd preserve, well, I've been on Earth long enough to know they'll be an uphill battle.

Even if it is different, I still want to know what it's like--through the eyes of someone that hails from the culture, rather than a third party's description. I've found many books at the library that discuss cultures, but I find them to be quite...lacking.

As for my inquiry, well...

...Dunno if there's a name for the 'culture' or whatever. But I'm from Iwatodai, Japan- year 2009.

Never gave it much thought. But today'd be Tanabata back home, in some places. Usually just has to do with festivals, putting wish-tags on trees and shit. I can't think of too much that's worth going into, though.

What specific part d'you wanna know?

Would you have participated in Tanabata?

I dunno what it 'means' to me- but I figure most everyone's rather have what they're familiar with.

...I did as a kid. Guess it depends now. It's just kinda an excuse to get together, check out the festival stands, that kinda thing. I ain't really checked it out in a few years.

If you feel indifferent about it, then that counts as what it means to you.

Japanese festivals like that are quite abundant though, aren't they?

That works. Then yeah- It's familiar, I don't mind it, but I ain't super excited for it either.

[Another nod.] They are. Most are just an excuse to get off've school or something, though.

Do you think that's how your friends think of them too, or do they value the intent of the festival? A celebration meant to reflect on things that may be taken for granted--or perhaps forgotten in the hectic pace of day-to-day life.

...or, perhaps, simply for entertainment.

I come from pretty far in the future compared to most people here. There's still culture then, but it's not nearly as varied as it is here. If I could change one thing, I'd get rid of Unitology.

"Still culture"? Are there people who think that culture would fade with time?

Some cultures have faded with time. Or they've blended into each other.

It's a sort of religion. A very crazy one and wrong one.

Unless humans come to function as artless robots, culture will still persist.

True enough.

They worship an alien artifact called the Marker and believe that the only way to salvation is through something called Convergence. Which, actually just involves everyone dying messy deaths.

Some people embrace the concept of obliterating their own kind. It's peculiar.

Peculiar is a nice way of putting it. [She would say it's bloody moronic.] A lot of them don't fully realize what will happen to them, they haven't actually seen it themselves. [Not that she actually thinks it'd change much for some of them.] They just assume they'll go on to something better.

Ignorance is a great way to control people. Be it willful misinformation or the lack of information in the first place; a tool I've seen people in power use before, regardless if its in the best interests of others or a plan to exploit them.

Sadly that's very true. Usually it seems like it's a mixture of both, some have best interests at heart while others just want to exploit the situation and people in it.

Despite what we were apparently brought here to do, things are a lot less...eventful...than what they were at home.

Yes, I had been expecting more of an imminent danger than what we have thus far been presented with. But I cannot say I mind the lack of an immediate large-scale battle of any sort.

It gives me time to prepare.

Making breakfast! A hearty egg souffle loaded with vegetables and meat, strips of pan-fried bacon, and honey quinoa bread that I made last night. Devilled eggs, too--just because I found a recipe that I wanted to try.
