I started thinking on whether Monster Romance is still a thing, so far as being a YA (or regular A??) sub-genre goes. T'is the season, I guess.

Anyway, I now have a question for the masses.

Which Monster Boy and/or Girl would you date?

There's a saturation on the market of vampires and werewolves, and probably demons, but there's a pretty wide selection of spooky love interests that haven't gotten a lot of literary attention.

Please include your list of pros and cons for your selected Monster Mate.

Yetis would be a pretty good option, I think. Beards are so fashionable these days, and they're 99% beard.

I did date a human whose life's work is researching all of the above. I suppose I'd try saltwater to see which way our children went.

I still tend to think of "monsters" as fictional things, despite the very real existence of various sorts of non-humans here and elsewhere, so it's interesting to hear that this is a research field.

Could they end up brackish? Or is a one way or the other sort of thing?

I'd count them. Maybe. I guess there's some degree of nefariousness implied in saying 'monsters,' but it doesn't matter much.

As for what monster I would sleep with? I'm going with fairies.

Ooh, I'm sure dating a fairy would be lovely. Granted, I've never known a real one, unless you count Megan Gwynn. So... Maybe I'll have to ask her out if she ever makes it back here.

And, yes. The Jersey Devil is definitely headed to the shelves. They seem to be a popular choice.

I think mermaids might count as creepy, depending on the depiction. But selkies are definitely creepy every time, so I suppose it's all the same.

I don't think I'd have thought of shapeshifters as a whole genre of monster. I guess I'm used to just thinking of it as an ability, rather than a species characteristic.

But then, there ARE a lot of shapeshifting monsters and ghosts. They'd all qualify on their own.

The vampires I know are not like that. But I'm not sure I'd go with a demon either. They kinda feed off of desire and greed and that sort of thing. Or at least, mine did.
