So far, that's right. But space is big! So maybe there's someone from a planet I haven't visited yet, or just missed meeting along the railway.
But so far, nobody else knows about the SDF or the railway itself.

You're from space, then?

What is the "SDF"?

[siriusly]

Well I WORK in space...but my home's on a planet called Tobito.
SDF stands for Space Defense Force. It's where I work.

I see.

I take it that you yourself are some variation of a soldier, then.

[That's what it sounds like to him, anyway.]

Yeah, something like that. I'm on call for any of the hazards that trains might hit along the way.

Trains?

[In space?]

I might have assumed that travel methods in space would be more advanced.

What do you mean?
Out of all the craft we have out in space already, trains are the most effective for moving lots of people and cargo...
Decades ago they'd have to try and stuff people into old space battleships which weren't built for that sort of job. Trains are effective on land, so it's natural they'd be effective out in space, too.

Well, I hardly have the expertise to argue with you on the matter. I have simply never heard of such a thing prior to this conversation.

Nobody else here's from my universe, or one with similar thoughts I guess. But then again, space travel's not very common even among the imPorts...

I have had the opportunity to speak with a great many people who are experienced in such matters since arriving here.

Really? I know there's a bunch, but a lot of people more than that I talk to seem surprised to hear I'm not even from Earth...

I suppose such a revelation might have been surprising during my first month or so here, though I find myself quite hard to surprise as time goes on.

There are a great many things here, after all, that do not exist within many typical human worlds.

[But, really, what even is a "typical human world" at this point?]
