[It might not be all that strange for someone wearing a mask to appear on the network; it might be a little strange for a mask covering the entire top half of someone's face, including his eyes. Not that Kanan seems at all concerned by this fact - he looks pretty relaxed, his attitude almost flippant. ]

I gotta wonder about a world with the technology to bring people in from other galaxies, but where no one can even get off-planet. Does that seem a little backwards to anyone else? Or nah.

[ He waves it off. ] At least tell me there's a decent dojo around here.

[ A pause. ]

Oh, right. I'm Kanan Jarrus.

It wasn't your fault.

[ He's heard the notification that this is private, so... he'll venture a little more. ]

I was only a padawan at the time but even I could tell there was a lot of stuff going on. A lot more than even the Council was aware of.

[ Because the rest of what he said had been kind and she appreciated it, but that - it gives her hope she had not expected. ]

That cannot have been easy.

[ Yes, it was very hard. He usually tries not to think about those earliest days after Order 66, because they were bad. Cold and hungry and terrified. ]

We were on Kaller. My master was Depa Billaba, and she gave her life to save me.

[ He lived with that guilt weighing him down for a long time, but he understands now, so it's a little easier for him to say it out loud. ]

I remember her. She was a brave and honorable Jedi, from what little I knew of her.

[ It had not been a great deal, but Padme had had enough dealings with the Council over the years that she had had some familiarity at least with all those who sat on it.

For her it was still only a month or so ago that she last spoke to some of them. ]

My condolences for your loss, Master Jarrus. It seems her sacrifice was not in vain, though.

Thanks. [ He... almost smiles a little, though it's sad. ]

To be honest, I didn't do very well with the chance she gave me for quite a while. I like to think I'm making up for it now, though.

It is not a choice that would be easy to live with, at such a young age. I am glad that you have found a way to, in time.

[ It feels strange, to tell him that while knowing who killed the younglings in the Temple. ]

[ She was about to sign off, but there's a slight pause, and then. ]

You said that you felt you were making up for what happened at first. May I ask what you are doing now?

[kanyounot]

Well, back home we were fighting back against the Empire. Bail Organa and Mon Mothma were - are - spearheading a rebellion.

[functusofficio]

Yes.

[ And that is pride in her voice. ]

I knew they would carry on.

You did not explain what you mean by what happened at first, though.

[kanyounot]

Oh, it just... took me a while to get around to it. I survived Order 66, I kept my head down for quite a while.

[functusofficio]

That you got past that at all shows great strength of will. Do not put yourself down for taking time to make your way after such an event.

Well, that's a nice way of exonerating me of cowardice, but thanks, regardless.

I would not call it cowardice, Master Jedi.

When times are hard, our survival becomes a matter of how we make it.

Please, it's just Kanan.

[ He did finally get knighted, but despite having a Padawan for three years he's still hesitant to claim anything like the title of "Master". ]

And I did survive. For a while there, that was all I was concerned with. My own survival.

[ It's a sad smile, sympathetic. Part of her can only think "I am glad you were not at the Temple." ]

That is all that can be expected from someone so young, in such a time. Had you thought of anything else, it would likely have meant your death.

Anyway, I think the Force had other ideas for me.
