Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

[ Anakin is sitting on a barrel, it looks like it's painted entirely blue. He's in a course coverall, and there's many different dripples and dabs of paint in various colors. White and blue are the most featured, then black and grey. But there is some yellow and red sneaking in there. There's a fleck of the same blue on Anakin's jaw, and he looks a bit sweaty. ]

When we arrive here, we are assigned a city, an apartment, a job. How many of you have kept those arrangements? What made you change them? If you didn't change them, why not?

[ He rolled his shoulders back, and twisted a little, stretching his back out. ]

I know there's a fair few of us with lightsabers. I'd like to get a bit of a dueling club together, but first we need to hold some classes. So anyone who is Force Sensative and wants to join in, let me know. It can be privately. But I will be holding some basic safety classes first to make sure everyone leaves with everything they brought with them still attached.

Amid the hundreds that suddenly appear,

a number of Padmé's own memories begin to circulate on the internet:

a video of a speech given by herself as the then twelve-year-old Theed City Supervisor about a new waterfall-water reclamation plan, an audio-only conversation between a new queen & her decoy just meeting for the first time [***], and a series of spliced together video clips of what looks like a recent trip home.

The most unexpected, and panic-inducing one, is realizing her wedding -- the one only attended by herself, Anakin, one Naboo Holy man, and their droids, not even a single Handmaiden -- is suddenly in those files, as well. In an alarmingly realistic VR detail. The wind whispering through the trees; the scent and the sound of the waves everywhere around them; the sun setting in the distance as they'd exchanged their vows and kissed.

[Morris looks thoughtful to camera. His right hand is clasped over his left - which is enclosed within a thick, armour-like glove. He rubs the knuckles distractedly as he speaks.]

In my time, gold was so desperately craved for that men would kill for it and were always seeking ways to find more of it. While there is still such theft or murder going on, it appears that pure gold nuggets are not usually the most desired item stolen or fought over.

What is it that is of most value here? What is most valuable to you?

Well, according to the official website, the cherry trees in Washington, DC will be in full bloom soon.

I didn't make an effort to get there this time last year. I think it just slipped my mind that it was coming up and by the time I remembered, they had already passed. That's the trouble with a festival that revolves around beauty and ephemerality.

This year, though, I'm going to make a trip. It's one of my favorite festivals to spend with friends and family at home. We make a picnic of it every year... would anyone like to join me?

[ When the camera turns on, there is a young, prepossessed woman of middling twenties, sitting in simple, but stately robes and her hair done in ornate loops and curls. It's taken her some time to think about how she wanted to approach this, especially after Anakin threw himself into this new network last night. Before. ]

Good morning,

My name is Padmé Amidala, and I am newly arrived here. I have been informed that I've come here before, both earlier and later in my life, as well as that I held office for a long tenure as representative for one of your cities. I do not remember the days I've spent here, and I apologize for the complications and any hurt that may arrive with that.

[ She's still very much on the fence about how much she wants to find. Torn between her ingrained training to prepare herself with as much information as possible, in case of any situation she might find herself in, and that of whether she should know all that might still be coming for her future if these other persons were indeed some version of herself she would still grow into.

The weight of a known or unknown future. Whether that changes it.
The freedom to still experience her to-come tribulations and triumphs first hand. ]

I do welcome contact from anyone who knew me in times before. I understand that it will take time and will require much delicacy, but I would very much like to hear from you if you are willing. I would also love to learn as much as I can about the governance of this new world that it sounds as I was very passionate about.

But now to somewhere that wasn't Naboo, or for Naboo, that wasn't remembered, but somewhere, somewhen, she'd forged a deep enough connection to this place, that she rose to challenge of serving these people of as her own, too, even if she couldn't remember those circumstances that lead her to such feelings.]

[ The viewpoint spins very slowly and smoothly, not showing a face but a tree, the bark, a branch, a nest. Occasionally tiny fuzzy grey heads stick out over the nest, and their squawking can be heard. The nestlings are grey and white, with pin feathers and a couple have a crest. Someone is studying a nest of blue jays. ]

I’m pretty sure there is a parent around, but only pretty sure. I don’t really know what they are either. Some kind of bird but? Are they going to be alright? They keep yelling.

[ Help a new import out? ]

Which isn’t what I was thinking about saying, but they caught my attention. Anyway, I’ve been filled in, including being told I was here before, even if I don’t remember.

[ With that Anakin pulls the device closer to him, turning it to record him. He’s young, the scar over his face fresh and his hair is very short – he’s only recently knighted and had his braid cut, and his hair is still very short from the more traditional haircut. And his smile is not quite confident, even shy. ]

My name’s Anakin Skywalker, I’ve been here a couple days now. And um, so you need a ‘driver’s license’ I’ve been told. How many of you have gotten one, how did you do it? I’ve been a pilot all my life, these cars have to be easier than a ship. Even a speeder.

My name is Deanna Troi. I've spent the past several days since my arrival reading what I can about this world.

Which makes me curious about where each of us is from, what each of our homeworlds are. It can be quite lonely in itself being taken from your home, particularly if there is no-one else here that we know. ( there's a brief pause. she's aware that this is supposed to be earth if an earth from a different time, perhaps with a different history given that earth didn't give people 'powers' in her reality ) Sharing something, a detail that you enjoy, a story of your friends can help, making you keep them in your heart. I understand that it isn't much or any solution but a little hope can do wonders.

If anyone wanted to talk more I'm a good listener. I may not know your home but I would like to know of it.

[The camera turns on and a rather ethereally beautiful man is sitting in front of it. He is dressed in silk robes of light green that seem to flutter at the slightest breeze. He is holding a decorated fan in front of himself and projecting the fine dignified and noble air of an immortal scholar.

When he speaks it is soft and gentle. He made sure to keep his speech in line with the image that he was trying to convey.]

It has come to this masters attention that... adjusting to this world is not easy for all.

[Of course, it had been pretty easy for him, but it wasn't all that different from what he was familiar with. Of course, because of his own foolishness, he couldn't admit to that now!]

Thus, this teacher would like to offer... lessons, in handling the new tools of this world. This one has become quite proficient and can lend aid to those of worlds less... of worlds lacking in such items.

Of course, such things are easiest in person, but, this master is also willing to answer questions here. Once availabilities and locations are known from those interested, a central location will be chosen for proper instruction.

[Having finished his message he waved his hand and turned off the camera.]

[ While others are worried about the crystals falling from the sky, Padmé has come to the network to address an entirely different, personal matter. Not that she doesn't find the crystals worrisome, but she's been on this planet long enough to understand that sometimes these things just happen. And comparing the phenomenon to the Death Star replacing the Moon has also helped to keep things in perspective. Along with... other events.

Offering the camera a cordial smile, she decides that keeping things brief and to the point will be best. ]

Since I arrived on this planet nearly a year ago, I have been pursuing my assigned career as a vlogger, but recent events have taken the joy of it from me. I feel it's time for a change and I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions for how to proceed.

[Anakin has come a long way. He began this journey as an angry man bent on achieving his dreams no matter the cost. Now he is soothing an adorable bunch of squeaky puppies. In fact, he is holding one against his shoulder, gently patting their back.]

If you like puppies, come by for a visit. [A fluffy white young cat is watching the spectacle from a safe distance away, looking...unhappy? Unsure?]

You can give Obi-Wan's kitten some attention too. [The puppies are a bit demanding and just as he calms one, another one starts to fuss.]

I know, I know... It's okay. [He has them snuggled on a big cushion and their bellies are definitely full of milk. It's almost time for a good nap.]

[Civilian clothes look nice on Anakin, but, as ever, he is resistant to ever cutting his hair. How dare you even suggest it?! But, regardless, he is looking...calm. Centered. This is new for him and the smile he gives anyone watching is almost...shy.]

As nice as it is to make money, I want to do some community work. Any pointers? I don't mind traveling between the cities; my job takes me all over anyway.

[He can be a bodyguard and foster puppies. Or clean a park. Or do anything good that needs doing.]

[He was gone for a week. A WEEK. And he comes back to find Anakin an emotional mess and a certain Sith Lord mentioning something about thoughts becoming reality on the network a few days ago. What incredible timing this all had. Considering Anakin's state, he decides it would be a good idea to check in with others who were probably affected.

It would seem that fate has terrible timing. I just came back from a brief trip overseas, and I see that I missed out on quite an event. Is everyone all right?

[Although it’s a bit fuzzy, this Jedi does indeed remember his previous time in this world.]

Its been awhile, hasn’t it? At least from the perspective of those of you who have never left.

[For him, it’s not been long at all, and he was a bit surprised by the ordeal. After all, he discovered that he’d apparently been gone for a year or so. There are some mixed feelings certainly, but he’s not really upset that he left and then returned just as abruptly.]

[Earth clothes suit Anakin somehow, but he still refuses to cut his hair and you can't make him, Dad. He is dressed casually and he is walking down a side street. While he had enjoyed being a mechanic before, he has found a new, interesting line of work.]

Opportunities are more plentiful than I thought. I'm going to have to trust my ability to read others for my new job, so it will be good practice. [But. BUT. He has to be careful. He can't close his eyes to any questionable ethics.]

Luke looks older; not so much physically, but in the sense that Things Have Happened and he's somehow holding himself together with the mental equivalent of spit and glue. Even that just barely seems to be working; something is clearly wrong, and it's not just the new all black wardrobe. ]

Hello. My name is Padmé Amidala, though many of you may already know me.

[ She doesn't hesitate or show any signs of the nerves she's feeling, the worry she has over what this may do to the others here. They have a right to know. ]

I understand that this isn't my first time here, but I have no memory of these previous experiences, and so I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all who knew me before. I am truly sorry for the pain this may cause you, and would very much like to meet all of you again when you are ready.

[ There's a pop of noise and she looks over her shoulder at a cloud of dust blooming from the room behind her. With a slight frown, she turns her attention back to the screen. ]

Also, I don't believe my apartment's cleaning droid likes me very much. If anyone has some advice on this, I'd be very grateful to hear it.

This is Ambassador Padmé Amidala of Maurtia Falls. I would like to introduce to you a friend of mine, Agent Williams, who will be introducing to you an initiative run by Commander Jacob Taylor with the support of my office. Considering our current predicament, the importance of it seems clear.

[To those who know Ashley, she sounds a little younger, a little less sure of herself than she does normally; while she's certainly putting on confident authority, it doesn't come as naturally to her at this age.]

I'm Agent Ashley Williams, and as you might have seen in the news, there's a new experimental pilot peacekeeping group patrolling Maurtia Falls to deal with imPort and metahuman crime and also dealing with national security: Aegis Force. In a world that's had trouble with imPorts before, Aegis Force aims to protect people and have imPorts do some good, by running crisis response, investigations, mediation, and training.

[ Padmé speaks again, a little more sternly. ]

We are guests here, and our effect on those who live here is great. It is imperative on all of us who care about our place in this world and the lives of others to do what we can to help defend them from the threats we frequently pose, with or without our knowledge.

It is my feeling that is possible to do so and to acknowledge that the strain placed upon us as Imports is also great. Being brought here is a precarious thing. But it is not something under the control of the ordinary citizens here any more than it is under ours whether we are brought here.

What is under our control is how we respond, how we help, and how we strive to be something more. If we cannot do that, if we only use our powers to help ourselves or in some cases to hurt, then we have truly earned their animosity.

I believe that we are better than that. And I believe AEGIS can be a proving point towards that.
