I have a question for you all, especially those of you who have been in this place for a while:

What stories do you think are underreported by the media here? What kind of events are you interested in reading more about?

Lots of things, tbh.

It all depends on where your passions lie, since your readers WILL be able to tell once you've lost steam, and also how much time you're willing to put into your work. None of us are like the Globe's Spotlight; we can't devote a whole year to uncovering the truth behind the Catholic Church, or the seedy underbelly of the fashion industry.

A question like this is fine for feeling out a blog post or a dedicated Bwitter, but you're going to want to read the Majority Reports for an idea of what everyone's talking about.

In this world: Heropa Daily is a great place to see what's being reported (and a quick search will tell you what didn't!), and De Chima also has a fairly solid paper.

This is getting long, so: what kind of journalism do you want to pursue, and what are you interested in reading in? What story do you want to tell?

I see. Sounds like you guys could lean more into what Spotlight does, if you have the funds and mean to follow a scoop for as long as it takes.

[ There's zero judgment here on her end; The Boston Globe has a fabulous team, but they also take years to uncover a story and see their sources to the very end. Best to make sure they know they're in it for the long haul. ]

Right now, the Phantom Thieves seem to be popular. Check the bwitter hashtags #countdorku and #takeyourheart. I'm sure there'll be more as news comes out about the Constellation and just how deep their connections ran.

I know. I'm glad you're putting out feelers, really. It's just that I remember when I was asking these questions in journalism school, and what seems like a quick question may have actual months of hard work attached with it.

No problem. :) I mostly cover supervillains for Heropa Daily, and Florida Man. Since that's been a thing for the past eight months.

In that case, you also know how important it is to stay aware of the imPort community. Off the top of my head, if you're more into entertainment: an underground club opened up in one of the Porter Cities, and the invitations were impossible to miss.

[ Trust her. Iris tried to ignore the hell out of those invites. That crisp card had promptly headed into the local shredder. ]

I'll also warn you, they tend not to take imPorts seriously. But in my experience, you can usually leverage your fame for better connections.
Start a blog. Create a Bluetube channel where you reveal what you've found. Partner with the schools here, start a interschool news network. You've got a lot to build your portfolio with, and you certainly don't need some big paper unless you've decided this is what you want to do for the rest of your life.
eloquentness: (give it to me straight)

[personal profile] eloquentness 2018-02-18 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
No idea, lmao. I left my partying days behind in college.

[ Honesty is the best policy, right? ]

Yeah. :( It's because we left our portfolios behind at home, and all we're good for is "increasing business." Getting freelance work (ie: work you may not care much for) is easy. Keeping that relationship is what gets tricky.

Well, elections are coming up. Maybe you and your team could spearhead an election guide on the issues/candidates and livebweet Election Day? Or cover the Swear-Ins, starting next month? I tend to focus on supervillains, and Elena Fisher focuses on native-centric events, so there's a huge niche that's missing.

You mentioned wanting to work a beat. I figured you were more interested in independent work, rather than pitching shorter, individual stories to a paper or magazine.

[ No shade, Bets. She's just trying to get a feel for what captures this girl's heart. ]

Politics as covered by imPorts, yeah.
I've written up articles on the past regarding various candidates and what they believe in, but none of the coverage is by anyone who'll actually be affected by the vote. imPort ambassadors are the liasons between us and the native government, after all, and their policies are for us, by us.

Are you 18 yet? If not, it's even more important that your team gets their voice heard. Go to the town halls, go read each candidate's announcement post or listen to their broadcasts. You'll learn a lot more if you listen.

Oh, like the Village Voice!

That would fill an important void, and you could easily get other imPorts to contribute art or photographs, depending on what you wanted to cover.

hoping to do some journalism by imPorts for imPorts?

I think the good that imPorts do is treated as an obligation for having been brought here, but the damage that they do is sensationalized. It's a terrible double-standard.

I'm not sure fault is the right word for it, dear. I think it's more like... people have been conditioned to only react to bad things.

Fair enough. I've been working as a freelance reporter for some of the non-imPort outlets if you want some contacts.

There should be fewer stories that treat imPorts like celebrities. Everyone in this world acts like we belong here, like they own us.

Sure, the second we step out of line. But until then they'll sell t-shirts with our faces on them. It's messed up.

That and worse. Some of the people who live here are imPort-obsessed.

You mean besides everyone being too busy turning us into commodities to care that we shouldn't even be here?

[ She almost doesn't even type this next part. ]

I believe it's set up this way on purpose.
