Humans are resilient, fighting to the death doesn't really allow you to get better, and we tend to be motivated by near death experiences. Just killing someone because they're weaker might even seem like... you're scared of how they'll spring back.

Plus, you shouldn't just be killing people anyway, though I don't know if it's so final for you- or- whatever you are.
