Hey, what's your favorite horror movie?

[So starts Veronica's latest video, showing her dressed as Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street. The costume's not complete just yet, there are three wigs of varying shades of brown in front of her, but she's definitely getting a headstart on putting this outfit together.

There's also a small stack of DVDs beside one of the wigs, with titles such as Children of the Corn, Massacre at Camp Macintosh, and Friday the 13th printed on the sides. Clearly she's put some thought into this.]

Barring that, in case you had no idea what a movie was before you came here, what's your favorite kind of horror story? Something with ghosts, monsters, evil killers—if it's something you'd tell around a campfire to scare the shit out of your friends, I'd like to hear about it. [She taps the stack of DVDs.] Research purposes, you see.

[And by research, she means she's trying to find the movies that'll terrify the shit out of the most people to screen for the night.]

Sometimes we like being scared. [She enunciates every word very slowly, as if she’s talking to a kid.] Especially if there’s a TV screen separating us from the monster.

Halloween. October 31. The reason why there’s suddenly skeletons and cotton cobwebs in store displays everywhere.

Why would anyone have actual skeletons in their closets?

And, uh—sort of? I guess? I mean, now it's just an excuse for everyone to dress up, watch scary movies, and eat candy until they pass out.

Uh. No. [More like she helped cover up the murders of three of her classmates as suicides and has been trying to forget about that for a while.] What the hell—does that usually happen in your world, do people just forget about a body in their closet for decades?

[A long, drawn-out sigh.]

Halloween is basically the day where everyone puts on a costume—something scary is traditional, but it's not exactly enforced. So you could have someone dressed as a zombie hanging out with someone who's just dressed as a knight in shining armor, and that's pretty much the norm for the night.

Also, people dress up just to ring doorbells and ask for candy. Usually they're kids.

Hey, people do some really terrible things to stay in power. This one town I passed through? The Regent in charge had the rightful ruler wearing a mask that made him believe he was a monster and exiled him to a cave for months. People in power with access to magical items are bad news.

And people give you free candy for it??

That's pretty fucked up. [She isn't judging, just stating a plain fact.] Not to mention kind of overkill. What happened to the rightful ruler?

Yeah, and yeah. Although you have to say "trick or treat" first when they open the door, so they know you're just there for the candy.

I actually found him. He was still wearing that mask and attacking people because he believed he was a monster. Had to fight him off and everything.

Good news is, once I broke that mask, he came to his senses and we were able to restore him to his rightful position.

Why "trick or treat?" I don't get it.

It's a threat. Either they give you a treat, or you play a trick on them. Like covering their house in toilet paper or prank-calling them for most of the day after Halloween.

Sure did. Left him for the local authorities before I had to skip town.

[He pauses.]

So...let me get this straight. I get to dress up and ask people for candy, and if they don't give me candy I get to prank them?

And this is a holiday?

...This is the greatest thing I've ever heard in my life.
