[When Jennifer turns the camera on, she smiles shyly and hesitates a little before starting to speak:]

So... this stuff that's been going on recently got me thinking. I'm trying to think about long-term plans, since for all I know I could be trapped here a while... [She hesitates again.] Back home, I got recruited for my job straight out of med school, and while I loved it and loved what I did... I think I'd like to open my own practice, too. But there's more than that... [She places her free hand in her lap, looks down at it, then back at the camera.] I also got to go around to other planets where people didn't have easy access to a doctor. To help them with diseases and injuries, and... I'd kinda like to do something like that again. My powers could be a big help with that and mean less equipment to transport... but I'm also only one person.

I don't even really know why I'm putting this out there. I guess my question is- have any imPorts taken a stab at having their own business here?

Kind of? I do courier work for the locals for extra money. I don't know anything on how the medical stuff works here, though.

Ahh, that's too bad... I do work as an EMT, but I'm wondering if I'd be able to do something to prove I have credentials other than that.

So you were part of Doctors Without Borders in space, basically? That's awesome. [Spider-Man's been around, but he doesn't get to other planets much and when he does he's usually fighting for his life. So jealous!]

As for imPort businesses, yeah, there are a few. There's StarkTech, the Xavier School for Imports, the Red Branch bar in Maurtia Falls, and if I'm allowed to toot one third of my own horn, I'm one of the founders of the Future Foundation, which is an import-run think tank. We just launched this past week.

A little bit, yeah- I was chief of medicine for a scientific expedition, and a lot of the places we visited didn't have doctors, so my team and I did what we could.

[She listens appreciatively.]

I have heard of the school- I guess it didn't occur to me that it was run by imPorts! And hey, nothing wrong with plugging your own work, especially when you're just starting out.

Is that a normal kind of job where you're from? Or as normal as Peace Corps or Doctors Without Borders, anyway. In my universe we've had a few invasions and a few immigrants, but not that many people who get to go the other way. Mostly the Avengers and sometimes the X-Men, when they're doing their cosmic stuff.

[ "Cosmic stuff" like that is in and of itself a meaningful term. Which it isn't, even in his universe. ]

Yes and no... my work was in a different galaxy and had to be kept hush-hush, since I worked for the U.S. military. I guess you could call it "cosmic stuff", in a way- technology that enabled near-instantaneous travel between distant planets and galaxies was discovered by humans, but they had to spend a lot of years and bring in a lot of brilliant scientists to figure out how to make it work.

Not to be a broken record, but that ... is really, really cool.

[ Maybe the novelty of interplanetary travel should have worn off by now, but the planets he's lived on as an imPort are still Earth, and Pete's a sci-fi geek at heart, even underneath the costume. ]

Hey, I agree and I've lived through all of it. I've seen things I never imagined I could have in my entire lifetime... met my closest friends, too.

Well, take it from someone who's been an imPort for four years now -- [ not to mention a superhero for more than a decade ] -- going through weird stuff together is one of the best ways to make friends.

Indeed. I haven't, myself. I don't feel I have an understanding of the conflict between this country and Russia to take a stance.

I'm not sure I do, either, if I have to be honest with you- there was a similar conflict in my version of Earth, but it ended years ago.

Is that so? I wonder if this is a common occurrence.

My team and I have had some experience with alternate universes back home... and it's common for the same things to happen, even if they have entirely different outcomes or happen for different reasons.

I see. And has this conflict with Russia been a constant?

Good question- I'd say registered, since I am myself.

I'm unsettled, but I've managed to open a business recently.

Same answer- I'm registered myself, in case that makes a difference.

You're entitled to better financial assistance.

In my case, I took a joint loan with my co-CEO and taking personal cuts to my pay so I can make sure my employees can at least put food on their table and keep a roof above their heads.

That's helpful to know- thank you. I want to make sure I have as much information as possible so I know if it's even feasible for me to do something like this here.

They did want imPorts to build their own businesses a while back. I doubt that's off the table yet.

I know we've been put into a tight situation, but we still have our free will for the most part. We're able to make good use of it if we really want to.
