I've been granted permission to lead a small expedition of National Guardsmen and imPorts to Alaska for reconnaissance and potential defense against Soviet aggression. I'm looking for volunteers.

This will be wilderness survival and we will not have backup. Rations and supplies will be what we can bring with us, and what we can gather. If you can't take those conditions, or if you can't follow my orders, don't waste my time.

If you think you can, I can use you.

Off the top of my head? I'll vouch for Jacob Taylor, Justicar Samara, and Thane Krios. They were all on the crew of the Normandy SR-2 with me and know their way around missions like this -- both when it comes to stealth and combat.

[ A pause. ]

Are we expecting trouble?

I'm preparing for it.

'No backup' sounds like they're planning to disavow us if things go south. [ And yes, he doesn't care if the government can actually tap into the Network and read that. ]

You think it's worth it?

That's exactly what they're planning on doing. I could tell that a mile away.

No better place to get answers than the center of things.

The rest of your volunteers might not be on the same page. [ An exhale. ] Do you have any idea how long we'll be up there? We'd better avoid dead weight.

[ A beat, skimming over the responses the post's gotten so far distractedly, and then he adds: ]

I made the situation very clear to any prospective volunteers for a reason, Commander. This is a deployment, not a vacation, and anyone who expects otherwise gets left behind. Like you said, we travel light.

All right. [ Her operation, her decisions -- but if Shepard finds something he violently disagrees with along the way, he won't hesitate to make it known. She probably knows that much, though, so that's a bridge they'll have to cross when it comes to it. ]

You didn't answer my question, though. How long can we expect to be gone... and when are we shipping out?

We're out on the 25th. Briefing and boot camp for the civilians on the 23rd.

One-week blocks. We go out there, stay a week, see if we need to keep staying for another week until we don't need to stay anymore. Any volunteers who can't handle it anymore can leave at the end of a block.
