[His massive castle city of cards that takes up almost his entire cell is finished, and visible. Infact, that's all you see is towers and towers of cards to the point that it's difficult to tell this is a Government Holding Cell at all. Quite the feat, one of utmost patience and concentration. Perhaps it- and the few visitations he's had are all that's keeping him from going over the edge in here. Though, that's pushing it. Were his Nen active and his aura accessible, his bloodlust would be felt all around him and over a wide distance. You can hear it in his speech, how tired and strained he is, though it's obviously he's speaking through a slim smile.]

What is your New Years resolution? [Something he's learned is quite a thing in this world, though doesn't everyone make goals for themselves? Guess people need a reason for everything they do- effort is quite difficult to come by when disinterest lingers around.]

I'd like to know what sort of things people here work for. [Like how he worked to finish this ridiculous town of cards, for example. Certainly showing a lot of effort there- or boredom.]

I'd like to be able to perhaps be capable of both some day, but...it's very difficult for someone of my size.

[giant bara hands do not lend themselves well to intricate and fragile detail work. his shoulders shake with restrained laughter at himself even as he leans in a little at the mention of magic tricks. ahhh super cool.]

Is it true magic or sleight of hand? Either way, I'm sure it will be fascinating! I always enjoy that sort of thing.

Both? [Hm.] Take my advice, focus on what you're already good at, otherwise you'll waste you effort.

I don't think I'm ever wasting effort by attempting to learn something new, even if I ultimately don't have much of an aptitude for it. It's good to experience new things.

[and he's used to failure, so it doesn't really bother him anymore. there's always something to be learned, even if it wasn't what he originally set out for.]

I don't mean something 'new' I mean something that doesn't fall in your natural talents. Anyone is better only focusing on those if they truly want to unlock what their potential holds. [New things. He laughs.]

And you would- say experiencing new things is always good in some way? [Of course you would. But lives are short, if you want to get at your best, you don't have time to spare on wasted efforts on wasteful things you were never meant to be good at.]

Yes, I would. There's no way to truly know what one's potential encompasses, or what will further you to realizing it if that's what matters to you. Everything in life has something to teach.

[it's sort of like what Dio had said so long ago, although less distorted. one could plan and plan, but the world can easily upend them. there was no one way to becoming the best possible person you could be.]

I suppose you have a point. [But forcing experiences can usually make things iffy. You won't ever know if you're good at gambling or card games if you never try, sure, but it's about being naturally drawn to things. Looking at what you've done so far without trying to thinking about it and going from there. Though- not everyone is as self aware as himself, so he'll drop it for now.]

But if I may say- you can't know what your potential as in store- no, but you can know it's bounds. It wouldn't be as fun if you could detect everything you are capable of.

No, absolutely not. One of the most exciting things is finding yourself breaking past what you once thought of as your limit! It's amazing what people are capable of when they push hard enough.

[oh whoops he's getting kind of fired up now. the not so secret shonen hothead beneath his gentlemanly exterior is peeking through.]

[Oh this philosophy is so not his own. Yes you can get yourself to learn anything but- there's a stopping point. You use up your bandwidth, squander it on things you have to work so much harder for and never get as far in but--

Do you think any hardship can be over come?

Without a doubt. That's not to say that there won't be a great deal of suffering along the way, or that it won't seem hopeless at times, but...if you're unrelenting with your efforts, there's nothing that can't be conquered.

[he knows firsthand how true that is. if he could survive Dio, could thrive despite everything that had been thrown in his way, there was nothing in the world that a person couldn't overcome. it all depended on willpower.]

I believe that with everything I have.

Conquered, ah- [He likes how you say that, he likes this optimistic talk in general. A coy smile, not that he's going to direct the video at himself any time soon. He hasn't used video on himself once since entering prison.]

The way you speak, you sound so convinced- is there something you have in mind speaking about this? You've spoken in a similar way before..

Ah, well, it's something I feel very strongly about because of my past. There have been a great many things in it that less optimistic people thought would have no other result than my death.

[and there was going to be more of that to come, if Dio's survival was any indication of his future. but Jonathan isn't worried - he has so much to fight for, and the resolve to see this through to the bitter end.]

So I simply know the truth of what I say firsthand. That's all.

Your death at a young age.... you think you can change it. [His voice a little more serious now, watching the screen from a small distance away as it stays focused on the towers of cards.]

[Over come your own death, those so many others, and time, show that it's inevitable. It's- idiotic, in a way, but the idea of defeat being inevitable, he can see it being just as frustrating as Jonathan makes it look. He can't help but admire the passion of his words though.]

Oh, no, nothing like that! I've just had to walk a hard road to keep my promises, and there's still a ways to go on it.

[Jonathan assumes that he must have worded himself poorly and caused this misunderstanding, because he doesn't know the truth. everything his family has told him (lies) about his future indicates that he makes it to quite a respectable age indeed, and can finally be surrounded by his loved ones as he'd always wanted. this couldn't be anything but a misunderstanding.

the dissonance is obvious from an outside perspective, but Jonathan has no clue.]

[To be fair, Hisoka doesn't know exact truths either, he's going on what he thinks he knows from following other conversations and what Jonathan has said. Though- a comment like that makes him interested in the truth. He'll have to fish it from Dio or Joseph...]

You mean- continue to walk a hard road, hm? What do you remember last from you've been home?

[ah. Jonathan doesn't like to talk about this in great detail, especially in public to people who aren't intimately involved. it's disrespectful, as if Dio deserved (or cared, in this instance) to have his reputation respected.]

I had just finished taking care of some family difficulties, although I've learned since coming here that things aren't quite as over as I had hoped. It's something I'll have to deal with upon my return.

Ah, family difficulties, I apologize, I'm not that familiar with that sort of thing. I wouldn't know where to start in understanding.

[Hm~ A thoughtful sound, smiling off screen.]

But you seem completely capable, seem- anyway. But changing your future, it's difficult.

There's no need to apologize; these weren't exactly the usual sort of troubles.

[he can say that comfortably, at least, and even with a light little chuckle.]

I know that achieving my goals won't be easy, but I'm prepared to continue fighting until I reach them. There's no other option for me.

Even when you-- can't fight anymore?

I'll always be able to fight. Even when my body can't.

But- will you really? [Keeping his tone of voice soft, purposely trying not to pluck at him and going for more curious/unsure instead. He doesn't want to tarnish this relationship just yet.]

[there's no uncertainty in Jonathan's voice - it's all steel, just like his steadfast expression. when he's like this, it's easy to believe that the entire world could push against him and he'd remain standing.]

Death holds no concern for the promises made in life, Jonathan. Remember you cannot control all that happens upon you, ah- no matter how much you feel something.

The only thing I can control are my own responses to the world. Death can wait until I've settled everything.

Ah, but death doesn't. I suppose people only truly accept that when face to face with it though.

Death has been surprisingly considerate to me. I have no reason to think that it won't continue that way until I've finished.
