[Alan doesn't use the video function. His brush with fame for close to seven years has made him wary of using anything that has both his name and face attached to it. He'll cross that bridge if someone actually recognizes his name. For now, he'll just act casual.]
I'm sure you're all sick of new kids coming in with the same question, so here's something different: Can someone point me in the direction of a flash light? [he flashes a slight smile that shows teeth and looks mostly awkward until he remembers he hasn't turned on the video function and drops the smile. Now he just feels silly. Good thing no one could see that.] I know. I know. 'What do I need a flash light in Florida for?' You can call it a security blanket. I just feel a lot better with one. [At least he's not asking for a gun too.]
[a beat]
Man, having a one sided conversation through your phone is weird. [Technically he's done a lot of talking like this thanks to interviews and publicity events so it's not that odd. But for the sake of trying to identify with a group of strangers, he'll put in a bit more effort at being friendly and at making conversation. He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly; once again glad that he opted for audio only] I don't know how you guys are doing it so naturally. Oh, that's right, I'm Alan Wake. It's a pleasure to... uh... meet you. [he grimaces at the lame follow up. It's almost like being in the Darkness for so long has diminished his social skills somewhat.]
That's all. Thanks.

And he knows a thing or two about security blankets. The man sleeps with a plasma cutter beside his bed.]
