[The comm video turns on. It's her first time post on the network and she ain't pleased, a good face to say howdy to a network of strangers. She's still dressed as a high plains drifter, hat and all, but one thing off about the get up is she has a name tag pinned to her duster coat with a name so long it's almost hard to read, but it says "TheRedPlainsRider". It was a real fight to get all of that on there. The name tag has the roomba logo on it.]

So. Can y'all tell me what sorts'a jobs ya got? Do they fit what ya got the life skills fer or . . . did the government just throw everything you ever learned out the window and give ya a job the two bit drunk from the saloon could do? 'Cause I really need ta know how offended I should be right now.

Any of ya brain surgeons or bridge engineers that'd like to trade with me and be a robot vaccuum cleaner "quality" inspector? Seein' as trainin' and skills ain't a thing folks 'round here seem to be worried 'bout, might as well grab any ol' job I can.

[Beat]

My job is stupid and I'm a bit sour, is what I'm sayin'.

[That southern drawl rings a few bad memories.]

You seem to attach great importance to your profession.

Is this because you need excitement? Do you need a word or symbol to hide behind? Do you enjoy success? The obligation of duty? Or do you just like helping people?

Fascinating. Which of those is most important to you?

I was assigned to mop floors in a Cathedral, which, if they'd read my file, they'd see was a completely ridiculous choice.

So, it isn't just you.

I don't mind mopping shit, I just don't want to be in a Cathedral. I've got some moral qualms with the whole idea.

Wouldn't mind working at a bar or something, though... yeah, I bet I could bar-tend.

I don't know how they pick 'em. They made me a security guard at a park, which so far involves a whole lotta not much, and not nearly enough bossing unruly teenagers around. No job satisfaction.

What would you rather be doing?

Well, I got a job as a writer, but... back home I write mystery novels and here they have me editing a men's health magazine. So it seems like they just saw "writer" and went "eh, close enough".

Well. It's my business to ask difficult questions.

You inquired of my work, so I thought I'd give you a vocal demonstration.

I would say my specialty is more with programming, but they gave me a job as a groundskeeper.

It's peaceful, but it's not exactly what I would have preferred. Still, a job is a job.

The job I was given is a little lower in the skill ladder than what I was doing back home. I don't mind it too much though, I can still do my own stuff on the side.

My only guess is that it helps me get acclimatised to my new body, but I don't really believe they're that considerate.

As you can tell, there was no explanation given. I suppose it's a 'take it and deal with it' sort of situation, seeing as we're the, ah...imported help, here.

Back home, I was a robotics student.

Here, they set me up as an electrician.

I thought at first they chose positions with respect to our various skill sets, but the longer I do what I've been assigned the less I believe that.

[Riza shrugs. She's a patrol officer, after all--and as she said upon arrival, she did patrol early in her career as punishment.]

That being said, it's possible to change positions. I know some people have.
