[ The video clicks on to show Newt, but he doesn't really seem focused on the device at all. Staring past it, eyes clouded with... something. The feed jerks around sporadically from shaking hands, and Newt looks filthy on screen, like he's been in one too many fights that he may not have won, covered in dirt and grime, blood and wounds.

After a minute of this, his eyes snap to the screen, clearing with recognition, remembering what he'd turned it on for in the first place. ]

Sorry, I- I'm... not well. I've got the Flare and it's getting worse. [ A deep breath, and he's dragging a trembling hand through his hair. ]

I think I'm contagious, and that means you're all infected unless... there's people called Munies- [ his expression sours at the term ] Immunes, shanks that don't get sick with it. Don't know if they exist here, you're better off going to a hospital, getting tested for disease or somethin'.

Just- for God's sake, don't bloody breathe on anyone until you do or we'll all be dead.

[ as ridiculous as the insult sounds, its not something newt or minho typically direct at him. not often, unless it's a joke, and even then it's rare. there's a complete kind of shock written on thomas's features, and his mouth works with words he doesn't know how to form, head shaking from side to side minutely. ]

You never told me to do anything! What, because I didn't make a break for it fast enough?

[ maybe. maybe he damned them, being too cautious. he has not idea what else newt would've wanted him to do. maybe it's just the flare? he hadn't been this far gone when they were locked up in their room. ]

The nanites bring back the shuck dead; you don't think they can't rebuild your brain?

[ he's telling himself that. get them working again, they'll patch him up. it'll be fine. ]

The note, Tommy! I'm talking about the bloody note! I gave it to you and you ignored it! [ He's outright screaming now, and not a second later the feed goes flying, cracking against the side of a tree.

It's a few minutes before Newt moves to pick it up, but when he does, a crack across the camera, his eyes look clearer. His face pulled in tiredness instead of rage. He rubs his hand over his face, like he's trying to collect himself more. ]

I don't have time for what ifs and cures that might not even exist for me. Just take care of everybody else first. I should be your lowest priority. Understand?

What note? You didn't give me a note! You couldn't have - unless you carved it into the pork chops.

[ they didn't give them any paper, or a pen. newt only just learned he had the flare, or had he known before? had he wrote something before they made it to that room, and thomas just didn't notice him passing it on? ]

We have to test this clunk before we know if it'll work at all, why shouldn't we try it out on you? What'll it hurt?

You haven't gotten it yet. Bloody great, this is a hell of a time to be ahead of you shanks. Don't worry about it, you weren't gonna listen to it anyway.

[ He sounds worn out, like he's fighting a losing battle against himself, and really that's just it. He's losing himself and it's exhausting to try to keep his head about him. ]

[ like thomas has been since he got back. newt went home, went through all thomas did, went passed the little room they're held in. maybe they got out, or maybe wicked still has him. there's a million questions he wants to ask, but none of them matter right now. not with this.

he's still incredulous, though, with every new thing newt tells him, jaw gaping as he shakes his head. ]

What're you talking about, man? That's it? You're not even gonna try? [ that edge creeps into his voice, from when he was in the glade, being snide at the others who'd decided the maze was their fate. ]

I'm done trying! [ He snaps again, dragging his hands through his hair roughly, pulling on it hard to force the pain to make him focus. He has to stay calm, for everyone else's sake. A little for his own sake too, really. ]

You know how long it took me to get this way, Tommy? Three weeks, it took three weeks for me to almost completely lose it. I've got days left of sanity, if that. Every hour I'm losing another bloody part of my mind, and you want me to keep fighting? I've been fighting, longer than you can possibly imagine! I'm done with it, all of it! I should've been done with it back in the Maze, I shouldn't be here now and none of this would bloody be happening. Not to me, not to anybody else.

What do you mean, back in the Maze? Just give up like Gally did? Like the others that stayed behind? [ his brow furrows, and he tries to remind himself that the flare is eating away at newt's brain, that he's not thinking right. newt and minho had been the ones steadfast behind him in trying to get out, though. he knew he hated the maze, but all the more reason to get through it, right? ]

Look, if you wanna go sit in a corner and wait for it to be over, fine. But when we figure this out, you better not try to push us away.

[ like he's doing now. because the second thomas figures out a viable solution, newt is the first person he's going for. not only because of how important he is to him, but because his illness is the farthest advanced from anyone's here. ]

[ Newt sneers, and there's something feral about it. But what comes after is worse. What comes after is what Newt never meant to say to anyone else. ]

You don't remember how I got my limp, do ya, Tommy? Even if you probably watched me bloody jump. Bet you shanks took plenty of notes on how I reacted to the Maze before you went and tried to play hero for all of us. I've hated every second of every day, and I'm done fighting it.
