[He sounds tired, like he's been up all night and then some. In the background Sakamoto can be heard nervously talking.]

It's prolly no surprise t'anyone this thing got to Maurtia Falls. My roommate came home sick, dunno where he's been.

To any of the other residents of 004: If ya missed it so far...don't come home. I can't...

[Sakamoto's voice momentarily raises, "We're fine! It's just our imagination, isn't it!?" and the sound of a chair scraping the floor closer to the mic.]

Would ya shut up!? This is yer fault I'm here!

[Heiji sighs heavily.]

M'sorry. Just...stay away 'til this is figured out.

[Crap. Did this stupid plague thing cause memory issues too?

Dammit, he was going to have to ping Kudo and find out how much the little detective has gotten about this and then troll the network himself.]

Tantei-han?

[There's another few seconds of silence, and Heiji cusses, low and harsh. Who was it this time? Kid? How long did he lose? How long until the holes in his mind were bigger than the intact bits?

There's a sound of the chair scraping against the floor as Heiji gets up. He wraps his hand around a glass and, with a frustrated scream, he throws it against the wall. The sound of glass shattering wasn't nearly enough, so he kicks the chair over. It was childish, but he couldn't stop shaking. Couldn't stop the anger from wrapping around him like a shroud.]

[Yeah. Like that's going to make him any less concerned.]

Hattori! What's going on over there?

It's fine, dammit! [He's distant from the mic, having gone to pick up the glass with shaking fingers. There's a hiss after a moment, followed by an almost inaudible 'shit'. He returns to the comm.]

Hold on a minute, I'll be right back. [Leaves the room in search of a washcloth without waiting for a reply.]

That sure didn't sound fine.

[It's grumbled, but KID does as he's asked to.

Although it's done with copious amounts of fidgeting and finger tapping.]

[He's only gone long enough to wash his hands and grab the washcloth he needs to press against the cut. He takes the time to clear his head, searching for the calm that comes with kendo practice. It does come easily, but by the time he picks up his chair and collapses into it, he merely sounds tired again.]

Sorry, had to get something. [Like nothing's wrong. Ha.]

I would guess that that was part of the whole 'being infected' thing?

It's...harder to keep control of my temper. [He sounds reluctant to admit it.] An' it's only going to get worse.

I have access to some knock-out gas, if you would like to partake.

Normally I'd prolly agree, but I don't want ya catchin' this. It's fast and it's airborne. Gettin' close enough to knock me out would undoubtedly be close enough to get infected.

Hmm.

I could probably modify my gun and shoot it in. Or think of something else.

[There's an amused snort and then Heiji switches to video. He...doesn't look good. He's clearly gone a bit without sleep or a shower. His hair is sticking up in tufts where he'd been pulling on it, his eyes are bloodshot.

And he is glaring right into the camera, because he has a monopoly on idiotic potential self sacrificing, okay? Don't you dare.]

I'm being deadly serious here when I say no, Kid. I don't know th' range of this thing. We're not as bad off as Heropa, but the whole city is infected. If you are not at risk, then don't come here!

We'll be fine. They're gonna find a cure, and we're gonna be there to receive it.

Tantei-han, it's a bit late for that, I'm already in Maurtia Falls.

[There's a flash of devastation before he can duck his head, fingers restlessly tugging his bangs further out of place. He shouldn't be surprised, almost wasn't. Kid had to live somewhere, and there'd been a twenty five percent chance it'd be Maurtia Falls. He couldn't think of any reason for the thief to be out here otherwise. Not with the quarantine procedures and the whole populace panicking. Still, it hadn't hit everyone. Newt had said some people were just immune. If any of them was that lucky...]

Tell me you're not sick.

[To be honest, KID is surprised that Hattori seems to care so much. But that's neither here nor there.]

I haven't developed any symptoms yet, if I am infected.

[He doesn't really discriminate ~~anymore~~ when it comes to people's lives. His level of concern just doubles if he knows the person. Even if it's just a 'we happened to be at the same place at the same time'. Kid's from his world, so here that only makes it worse. He doesn't really think about it much.

He nods his head and loses a few seconds staring at a point beyond the camera, before he pulls himself back into focus.]

Good. Even more important t'keep yer distance.

Perhaps. Although with the amount of time I spend here, it would probably be pointless by now. If I was going to be infected, I already would be.

[He...doesn't have anything to say to that, and it shows. The frustration works it's way across his expression as he tries to stay level. Breathing is key. He can do this.]

M'fine. [Looking away from the camera, itching to turn it back off but feeling like a coward if he does now.]

We're gonna make it through this. I gotta keep an eye on him. But... [God, how can he even think about saying this? He's determined to keep his head. Anger is nothing new to him. He can do this. But. Always a but. But what if he can't?]

But what, Tantei-han?

I'm gonna fight with everythin' I got, so don't take this like I'm givin' up. But if yer immune, then I'm gonna trust ya to make sure I don't hurt anyone. The final stages of this thing are bad, Kid. If I lose my head, then stop me.

An' don't tell Kudo.

I'll make sure to have the sleep capsules ready.
