[Riza lets out a sigh of her own, closing her eyes.]

I'll take care of Zoey, and of Ed, Winry.

[She pauses.]

Maedhros is coming, I know--and where is he taking you?

[There's a long pause, and finally--wait. Is she laughing? Yeah, that's definitely a bit of a chuckle there.]

That's because you are, sir.

Mm. I think she would rather you stay safe. I'm sure she won't hold it against you.

[She pauses. Even she doesn't want to think of what happens to people as they become sicker with the Flare.

Anyway let's talk about something else. Anything else. Because as she makes her way to Winry's residence, she'd like to think of anything but what she's expecting to see. It's not that she hasn't seen plenty of it already, as she has--it's that she's about to see it in the face of a friend. So! Let's talk about something else.]

You know, I've told Winry countless times she can call me Riza. You can do the same, if you'd prefer.

[Winry lets her head fall back against the door.]

I don't know. He didn't tell me where he's taking me. Somewhere safe.

And your reminders are making it worse. Pretend like you might care for him and treat him like someone who's desperately worried about someone he cares about. He's not leaving the quarantine area. I've asked him to stay there. He can't help me, but you should at least try to help him.

[And yes, that is a likely spectacular spit-take from whatever he's drinking at the time. Luckily, there are no dogs in the immediate vicinity to get a facefull of it. But no, there was nothing particularly grand or all that different in comparison, really. They're still young, after all. The most they did was kiss and went out for dinner. Which of course still was punctured with bickering.]

Of course. During times like these, it's important to try and keep morale up. Thinking of happier moments can help ease the difficulty of the situation.

[She can hear the thump of Winry's head against the door, and closes her eyes.]

[Winry sighs. She doesn't want anyone to be put through watching her go crazy and become violent, but Riza might feel better if she does check up.]

How long you'll be yourself is irrelevant.

A friend wouldn't allow you to go through this entirely alone. Ed can't be here; I can. And even when you aren't yourself, know that I can defend myself just fine. That shouldn't be a concern.

[And darn if she doesn't sound convincing: she would likely allow herself some harm before truly defending herself from Winry regardless of the girl's state. That isn't a detail she's likely to share, though. The mechanic needs to believe that she wouldn't be such a danger that Riza would avoid her. Sugarcoating that truth is a lie, but one she's more than willing to tell.]

[Winry turns as Riza speaks, listening closely. It sounds like something Ed would say, really, and that more than anything keeps her attention.]

I don't want it to be a concern, Riza. Not for you nor anyone.

Titles and status are just part of the military. I knew what I was signing up for going in years back.

But well. Yeah. I guess I do give a few people nicknames. Like Donkey Kong, Lion King or the Idiot Prince too....

[Come to think of it. It's probably usually the women that get off the nickname treatment. Probably for good reason.]

[There's a part of him--somewhere in the back of his mind--that tells him to let it be. That it's the virus that might be prompting this reaction, that she's just extremely concerned, and rightfully so, about someone she cares deeply about, as he is with the Lieutenant.

Yet when Roy speaks again, his tone is a little shorter, his words a little clipped.]

If you think any of my comments were for show, or were said without any concern for his safety or a desire to help him, then you're sorely mistaken.

However, in this situation, there is little that we can do to help those who are infected. To think otherwise, would be foolish. Right now, the best that we can personally do is to ensure that those who are unaffected remain that way. Even if the worst should happen, even if those we care most about are on the other side, no matter how worried we may be for them, we must continue to do what little we can. Dwelling on our concerns will only immobilize us.

Come now, Fullmetal. Who exactly do you think you're talking to?

But more importantly, this is so amusing look at that smirk on Mustang's face it's just as egotistical as the tone of his voice.]

There's no need to be embarrassed. After all, it's only natural. Especially once relationships develop over long periods of time.

[Restraining the infected. It says a lot, but mostly it gives him an idea of the situation and the dangers that lurk out there.]

If it gets worse, I want you to find a place to take cover in and stay there until it dies down, or a cure is administered. With the amount of people working on it, and the technology here, I'm sure they'll be able to find something to help soon.

[Winry's eyebrow twitches. It sounds like he's paying no attention to what she's saying. Just like how he was speaking to Ed. Brush off those concerns.

She growls.]
