[The video clicks on after a moment, and it's obvious that Jean is in his hotel room in Miami. While he debated coming along, it didn't seem right not to get the lay of the land. As a member of the Survey Corps, he knows that part of the challenges they face is in gaining information when facing unseen territories. He knows that's the first thing he has to do now: face the challenge of this. He doesn't understand what he's doing here, from the short flight, to the transit over in the flying ... carriage, but here he is.

Along the way, he asked one of the government officials to show him how to use the device they gave him. It's nothing like anything he's seen before, but if they're right, he can contact anyone. Well—that could be dangerous. But one thing he knows for certain is that this place is definitely not home.

It doesn't look a damn thing like it.]

Heh ... some thing they've given me here ... [That's the first thing he says, shaking his head.]

This is Jean Kirstein of the Survey Corps. I'm gonna bet none of you have ever heard of a thing like that. I asked a couple people about titans, and they asked if I meant some kind of "foot ball" team. I asked myself how the hell someone could be so lucky not to know what a damn titan is, but that's what it is. Luck.

[There's a bitter sound that escapes from the base of his throat.]

I'm not going to ask you what it means to be a hero now that I'm talking to you. Only idiots care about idealistic thoughts like that, and I'm not some dumbass.

But I'd like to know what dangers this land faces if we're all needed as heroes. I don't get their war or what a "Russia" is. And if this civilization is so large, where the hell does the king reside?

[Not that he's expecting face time or anything, but he's utterly baffled. He's just trying to keep calm about it. And he is, for the most part, but irritation is clearly marked all over his features.]

Russia's a country. [ It's hard to explain concepts he takes for granted, and the struggle probably shows in the pause it takes him to figure out how to word that into hopefully more helpful terms. ]

[From what he understands, this country is huge. It reminds him a bit of what he's heard about civilization before the titans, and even then, he knows little.

The government likes to keep it that way.]

Good question. [ One he hasn't really thought about before... time to ask the internet, probably. ] All of it technically, but we fight over it a lot. That's pretty much what the wars are about.

The United States of America -- that's where you are now -- has an area bigger than three million square miles. Hope that helps.

Russia is a country situated in northern Eurasia, which is the continental landmass of Europe and Asia, both continents.

And monarchy system has been replaced in many parts of the world, including this country. The system is of a "republic", a form of government in which the power resides in the people. and the government is ruled by elected leaders, rather than inherited or appointed. The leader of the country would then, be called President and not King.

What do you know about the titans?

I was actually curious about that myself. The "dangers" I mean. I haven't dealt with anything calling itself a titan, but my own world is dealing with some issues that make me wonder why they feel the need to call in so many outsiders for help.

So far I haven't gotten many answers on that front and I asked nicely. So far we've only been dealing with terrorists, and even they are still a mystery.

[Pause and then he adds.]

Also, you're currently in the United States...he calls himself the president, we don't have a king.

I'm gonna have to look into this government elsewhere, I think.

[It seems like there are likely resources, anyway.]

We wouldn't call in people, either. [But why just throw outsiders out there to be eaten by titans? That would be ludicrous.] I don't suppose it can be that bad if we're allowed to live as freely as we do.

[ She's debated the worth of this with herself since taking a chance to poke at the communication device in the early evening. Jean is another drop into the pool of those from their world here, and as he sends his ripples across the pond, he's already bumping into Armin and Levi. Erwin is another name he'll soon known, and it all makes a clear, logical sort of sense. She has no intention to seek him out anymore than the rest, but she has no intention for him to suspect otherwise.

Saying it point blank is what has been in such consideration for her. Is it worth the time? Perhaps. Jean is not the same person he was when they'd all first entered military service. What kind of person he is now... regardless, she hopes it's one that Armin can rely on.

She addresses the camera, looking straight into it and holding as still as she's able. Her instruction from the officials at the Porter hadn't made her comfortable with moving around, unsure of how exact the video transmission is in the short run. She's there in an unremarkable shirt, hair pulled back, face the same as always. ]

Jean. [ A name hardly makes a conversation - she glances away, then back to the lens of the camera. ] You'll be hearing from someone you trust that I'm here.

[ Another pause. What the hell does she say? ]

I won't be seeking any contact in the future with you, or anyone from home. There's no need for such unnecessary interactions.

[This is someone who was supposed to be a comrade, a part of their class. He hadn't been as upset as Connie about seeking the necessary answers, but the truth is fairly blatant: it hadn't been the easiest thing to swallow. Easy, though, didn't mean he hadn't swallowed it, bit by bit, accepting it and attacking it as straightforwardly as possible.

Cutting through things is what he does best, and he presses on after a moment.]
