[You can tell something about this message has been a long time coming when it first clicks on, revealing the bust of a young boy with uncertainty in his eyes. The moment he confirms it's recording is the moment he places down the communicator with small hands, before settling back and sitting down. His eyes are downcast, debating - until he gathers some more courage and starts talking.]

Someone died.

[There's a lengthy pause after the announcement. He just... doesn't want this to make him a freak. He has to remind himself he's not the only one with an ability no one else has. That's the only reason he's brought himself to reach out.]

I can see her sometimes. She wants my help, [As all the benevolent spirits who visit him do, in the end,] But she won't say anything.

I don't know what to do.

[Dr Malcolm isn't here to help him. They'd said goodbye once he'd helped that little girl back home, but - he wishes he were here to give him more advice, now.]

Hey, hey. Being able to talk to dead people doesn't make you a freak, Cole. I...I get that people see it that way, but that's because they don't see the things you see. That doesn't make you crazy, though, or a freak. It just means your eyes are open a little wider than everyone elses'. It's not easy, I know that.

[There's silence on his end. His hands are fidgeting - his gaze lowered, subdued.]

That's not what other people think.

Yeah, I know that, too, all too well. A lot of people think I'm completely nuts, too.

Have you been to a doctor?

[That gives Isaac pause. Had he been in a doctor's care? Yes, but not for treatment, and he'd like to never do that again.]

Uh...sort of. It's...complicated. Did I look for a doctor? No.

I didn't look for mine either.

Someone made you go?

[... sort of.]

He found me.

A doctor found you? I don't think I understand, Cole.

My mom called him.

[Not true, but Cole doesn't know that. The doctor was one of the dead spirits that walked the Earth unaware of their own passing.]

Well, your doctor's helping, right?

We stopped seeing each other. Before I came here. He said we were done.

Oh. Well, there's nothing really wrong with you, right?

[Some of the last words he heard before waking up here were from his mother. 'You're not a freak'.

He remembers them now, but it's easy to forget. Even when they come from the person who means the most to you.]

I guess not.

And there's nothing wrong with that. You can see and hear things other people can't. That doesn't make you a freak, and if your father couldn't see that, then maybe it's better he isn't around to convince you otherwise.

[They're words he doesn't like to hear. He did love his father, and in a way he still does, despite the resentment, despite hollowness of his absence. His mother doesn't like to address the issue either way - she never has anything nice to say about it. About him.

Cole says nothing. He picks at his nails instead, tension in his downcast expression.]

You care about him, I know. He's your dad, but sometimes we love people who are bad for us.

I don't care about him.

[tension again.]

You say that now, Cole, but it's not true. I get where you're coming from, but you don't mean that.

Stop talking to me like that.

[Like he knows Cole so well.]

...okay, I'm sorry. [He sighs. He's really bad at this.] Look. When I was your age, [Did he really just say that? When did he start sounding old?] ...I thought I didn't care, either, that...my dad just left and didn't care about me or my mom. We never even heard from him again. As I got older, I realized I missed him, and I wanted to know him. I've been trying to find him ever since.

[A pause.]

Why? He doesn't want to see you.

[otherwise he wouldn't have left.]

That doesn't stop my curiosity about who he was...or is. I don't even know.

It's only gonna hurt you.

I think not knowing hurts more.
