Have you ever had those days when you've had to empty out your savings to relocate friends whose lives are in active danger?

[ She finally looks at the camera directly, as Ashiah can be seen bumbling across the wall behind her. ] I think it's time to admit I need a new weapon. The Porter recently took the one I've relied upon for years, and this [ She brings her hand up, holding a large knife. ] has proven a feeble replacement. I'd prefer something with more weight and reach, something that can actually deal damage. Motorized, if possible.

So, I'm open to suggestions. If you craft any yourself, sell me on your product. I'm willing to learn something new, but no firearms. They don't agree with my style.

There would probably be no one left for him to kill, if I had not been there to intervene. But luck is a thing I don't feel confident in depending on, not when I no longer have a charm around.

[ She may not seem the type, but Kanaya very much believes in luck. It's hard not to, when you've dated two goddesses who specialize in it. ]

[Maria raises an eyebrow. That's not the sort of certainty she's used to hearing from the superstitious.]

You sound very sure that such a thing would have made a difference.

It depends on the charm. Most of them are no better than a placebo, but that doesn't mean they all will be! Luck is certainly real, it just isn't as ubiquitous as people want it to be.

[ She shrugs slightly, then concludes as matter-of-factly as one can be with something so superstitious. ]

The most effective way I've known to channel luck is generally through magic. Or divinity, that helps.

[Maria isn't at all sure she agrees, but at least Kanaya sounds logical and reasonable on the subject.]

Many have claimed to channel the divine. I'm not certain that any actually have.

[ Kanaya puts her chin on a hand, giving Maria a small smile that's probably a little patronizing. ]

Ah. You haven't met any gods here yet. Not that I'm sure we have any, at the moment, depending on how you consider Lucifer.

I've seen those who claim to be such. If their claims were accurate, they wouldn't be as trapped as we are.

Or you underestimate the forces that keep us here. I've always felt it demonstrates her power, that she could bind even gods.

I've known plenty with power to that level, always cut to a smaller portion than it should have been. But I have a bit more experience with that, even beyond the time I've spent as an imPort. Two of my girlfriends were gods.

Mmm. I see. I suppose that makes you quite an expert.

[Yeah, she's not buying this at all.]

I'm one of the top five most tenured imPorts. Trust me, I've seen plenty. There comes a point where you aren't really surprised by things anymore.

The human embodiment of a century? the fallen angel who birthed evil? The well-manicured viking trickster? I think what would really surprise me is if a god exists who could transcend the Porter's grasp.

[ Kanaya groans, raising an eyebrow. If Maria wants to get snappy, she can snap right back. ]

Much as an outsider can, at least. It takes years to really grow accustomed to how backwards human customs are.

But it has nothing to do with "this era" as it does these circumstances. You've been around a bit, haven't you? I'm surprised you'd be so incredulous after so long.
