Although I suppose it doesn't think it's being very naughty, but sending people away like as does, that's just rude. I'm someone who thinks that inanimate things can act rudely, that such things aren't just limited to people-- after all, people can be rude without knowing it, so isn't that the same thing?

[ She utters a bit of a laugh, but then shakes the idea away with a flick of red hair. No sense dwelling on that, after all. ]

I've never heard the term genessi before. Does that describe your abilities or is it a job of yours?

At home, it's both! Genessi are people who have an activated alcheregis gene, it allows us to manipulate genetic codes and put changes into people. It's also the general term for the work we do.

And what would manipulating a genetic code allow you to do? Forgive me, I am not from a modern world with all of these modern world science terms.

[ At one point in time, Haen would have found that baffling; it still seems a little strange to her, but having been in this world for some time has given her a better understanding of how to explain it. ]

Genetics are what makes everything customized about a person! Everything from your height, hair, eye colour, how long your pinkie finger is, how good your memory is, whether you have good balance or are clumsy, every little bit of everything that's you, belongs to a code that's written in your DNA-- inside your body! So genessi can make changes to that code, rewriting little pieces of it, and that shows up as changes. For example, it's just a few simple tweaks of the melanin in the stroma of the iris to change eye colour.

[ She leans forward toward the screen, so that Petyr can see her grey eyes change to blue, then to brown, then to an alarmingly unnatural bright purple, all without her blinking. ]

Think of it like a word! One little change in the letters can entirely change the meaning, like stationary with an 'a', it means something that doesn't move. But stationery with an 'e', that's office or writing supplies.

[ Petyr watches her, riveted by how her eyes shift in their color as much as he's fascinated by her explanation. This seems like such a useful power. And this seems like a girl he really wants to know. ]

You have an incredible gift, my lady. Something that can only be limited by the extent of your imagination. I did not realize there was an explanation for why our bodies look or behave the way they do. And I believe you could teach me a great deal about what you know in regards to such a thing.

Do these changes you can make return to normal in their own time? Or do you have to put them back to normal yourself?

Thank you! I confess I do find being a genessi quite a lot of fun, and teaching is fun as well, I've volunteered at some biology classes at local schools the last time I was here.

At home, the changes stay permanently unless they're changed or removed by another genessi, but the nanites here don't play nicely with my alcheregis! So here the changes wear off after three days.

I should love to witness your abilities first hand someday. Has anyone offered to pay you for them? They do seem to be quite useful talents and so often people are dissatisfied with their own personal appearances.

Oh, that's one of my jobs back home, in addition to being a Flicker. Genessi work pays better, of course, but it's less steady, and Segan can't work, so I have to support both of us.

I hadn't really thought about it! And how am I supposed to answer that for Segan, I'm a genessi, not a mindreader.

I am certain the signs are there, if he does. You taking care of him is often more than enough for any man to fall in love. Not to mention, you are a beautiful woman. I would be highly surprised if he does not feel that way about you, my lady.

Signs are only good for so much, dear! I much prefer the direct approach in most things.

The direct approach is often the easiest of approaches. But sometimes, it may not be the most effective.

I imagine it would be impossible for him to have been with you for as long as he has and to not fall in love with you. So long as he is interested in women, of course.
