[ Sitting before the screen is Kitty Jones...or, well. A girl who looks like Kitty. A girl who sort of looks like Kitty. Because whereas Kitty Jones tends to be cute, this girl is flawlessly, sleekly elegant - fiercely beautiful in a way that only very expensive haircuts and very expensive cosmetics can accomplish. Her bearing is different - unsmiling, haughty, eyeing the camera with contempt - and her accent, too, is altered - posh, educated, a little drawling. She speaks in a low and authoritative voice, beginning straightaway with no hesitation. ]

Since quite a few people are having a bit of trouble with this, I'd like to first introduce myself, so that no one calls me anything silly. My name is Medea LeFay. I'm a Junior Undersecretary with the Ministry for Internal Affairs. Some of you may think I have some other name, but I have reason to believe that the creature that resembles me was actually a demon taking my face in an attempt to slander and discredit me.

[ She...actually has reason to believe that the creature was in fact some other version of her, but, well...best to try to spread a bit of misinformation, to reduce the possibility that anyone will try to use the name Kitty Jones to cast harmful magic on her. ]

Second - [ She tosses her head, flipping her perfect glossy hair over her shoulder. ] I have been made to understand through my research and investigations that events such as those which have befallen us, with memory-alterations or dimensional displacement, are often followed by an attack by some foreign power or dissident group. My home is adequately warded, and as a magician of the first order I am thoroughly prepared and able to defend it. If an attack comes, any who find themselves in need of sanctuary may find refuge with me.

[ And doesn't that seem like an attractive offer? Because this girl seems like someone who would be so fun to spend time with. So fun. ]

And third...I have heard speculation that these changes have been brought about by magical means. As I stated, I am a magician myself, and have no knowledge of any spells that can cause confusion of this sort. What evidence do we have that magic is at its root? Any who have knowledge of this, speak; I charge you.

[ Then a beat. ]

And fourth...My home seems to be infested with these - small creatures. Crab-like, but with colorful shells. They seem to be pets. What are they, and how does one care for them?

[ what a nice-seeming young lady this is. ]

Grumpy lady! [ oh sweet jesus it's him. ] Well it's certainly not anything time related because the temporal whatsit detector isn't going 'ping.'

[ Oh sweet jesus. It's him. She lifts a finger to her forehead in a theatrical show of annoyance, but asks: ]

Right. And what, pray tell, is a temporal-whatsit-detector?

It detects temporal whatsits, duuuuuuh. [ ask a stupid question... ] Usually you can tell with these things if someone's been shifted around in time. There'll be little leftover bits floating about, it'll attract other bigger nastier things, it'll show up on scanners, and so on and so forth. With this? Nothing.

[ She purses her lips. ]

What about being shifted in dimension?

I'm not looking for dimensions, am I. I mean, I already know we've been shifted in dimensions, I'm checking for more of dimensions and time.

Yes, but - what about dimensions alone.

Oh! Well isn't that shift obvious?

[ Irritably: ]

I don't know. I'd never even heard of different dimensions until a few days ago. I'm still not even certain what they are.

Long version it is! [ The Doctor cleared his throat before continuing. ]

Alright. The thing about dimensions is that they range from something close to your proper dimension except for one change to something where something as basic as the forces of gravity's different. You can always find parallels, but sometimes they're few and far between. It's hard to move between dimensions—usually takes some sort of nasty machine that doesn't work properly, but it can be done.

[ She purses her lips, looking judgmental - but she's listening. ]

Right. Like this one. This is a different dimension, they've said.

Bingo! So the question now is how'd we get here? And, importantly for some, how d'we get back? It's not time nonsense and I don't know enough about real magic to guess if it's magic nonsense—got any other ideas?

[ he's just 100% unaware he hasn't answered any of Kitty's questions ]

[ A little impatiently: ]

But that's not all I'm asking about. I also want to know about what they said happened to us here - the reasons they're saying that things have changed.

[Kitty, you're looking more...upper class as of late. In case you didn't know.

Cue Junpei's eyebrows at full 'perked' position.]

Kitty?

[It comes out before he can stop it--sorry, boy's just surprised.]

I-I mean...Ms. LeFay. Did I say that right?

Oh, that? Well that's obvious—our memories and other people's memories don't add up. Or, well, I suppose our backstories but it's a little bit our memories as well. Point one! My past self's been here before and I don't remember it. Course, that doesn't mean anything, retrograde amnesia's a thing after all...except the fact that my past's a bit different from my present in ways that a bonk on the noggin can't change. [ Amnesia doesn't make you suddenly look like Paul McGann, after all. ] That means this sort of nonsense has precedent.

Point two! My future self's been here despite the fact that I most decidedly don't have a future self. Now that could be just everybody putting me on but it'd take a concerted effort across multiple species to do something like that and I have a feeling none of the humans here would have let Murray into the planning. Plus, add in the fact that there's Time Lord tech here that none of you people could recreate, that's another point to my future self actually being my future self and me being wrong slightly.

So, the summation! Either there's been some sort of dimensional flux and we've physically swapped locations with our counterparts or team magic's right and there's something more to this than a simple bonk on the head, any questions from the back of the class?

[ Her thick brows draw down dangerously at the word Kitty, then relax when he corrects himself. She lifts her chin and answers, her voice haughty: ]

I have always been articulate. The issue is that you have confused me for some small-minded, unintelligent, thuggish creature who had the audacity to steal my face.

[ She followed, like...fifteen percent of that. Eurgh. But she did get one part of it: ]

Physically swapped locations.

[ She narrows her eyes. ]

Are you proposing that our counterparts - the ones here - might be taking our places back home?

Maybe! I don't know! But it's a sound theory, don't you think?

It's a wretched theory!

[ Her eyes widen. Her lips thin. She...looks a bit distressed by that. ]

I can't even imagine - I cannot imagine the damage that anarchist could do with my authority!

Probably just about as much damage as you're doing to her personal relationships, I'd imagine. [ it's just said all too casually as the Doctor keeps up that nonchalantly goofy smile on his face. ]

Who gives a fig about her personal relationships? I'm talking about the fate of the government here!

[ Oh and the Doctor just can't help but frown at that. ]

Who gives a fig about the fate of the government? I'm talking about her friendships, after all. Tell me, how many people have you snapped at who've tried to help you or approached you as a friend?

What is magic?

[ He likes the word. He long wish that he can somehow change how the gems shine in his grotto, or actually fly. ]
