001

Although I’ve been on Earth for several years, this is my first time visiting Florida, and so far I think it fails to live up to its hype. I have seen no alligators, no out of control students on spring break (or the required breaking of things), escaped exotic animals, giant mice, or the Man-Thing. Although there are plenty of flipflops, so at least I was not misled on that point.

Disappointment aside, in an effort to get into the Florida spirit I have uncovered several examples of what I believe to be native Florida and beach music. At least that’s the claim my research uncovered, in regards to Jimmy Buffett. I can sort of appreciate his aesthetic, I guess. He has a distinctive sound. Given that there is no tectonic activity anywhere along the Atlantic coast of Florida or in the Gulf, I am not sure where volcanoes came into anything, but I can see why if you lived on a tiny island you might take to drinking excessive amounts of margaritas, so I have decided to give it a pass for now.

However, it seems objectively obvious that the Beach Boys do it better. All the songs don't sound the same and feature something beyond what I assume is a midlife crisis based around drinking and wishing you could sit on a beach all day. Presume I am not wrong about what a mid-life crisis is. They actually celebrate a party beach spirit and attempt to actually vary tempo at times, which I did not realize would be so appreciated until I sat through someone's interpretation of Jimmy Buffet's Best Hits.

See attached short playlists for comparison.

While I finish going through their complete repertoire, I'm taking suggestions for new music. I've hit all the major artists in blues, country, current pop, rap, and R&B, and the beginnings and basics of classic rock, but primarily all produced by the United States and Britain. Suggestions for variety would be appreciated.

The Beach Boys are from California, not Florida. California beaches and Florida beaches are different. Just because it's still a beach doesn't mean it's the same.

Jimmy Buffett is also not from Florida, though he moved there (here? Is he here?) later. You're closer to the mark with "native Florida" music than you are with the Beach Boys. He's called his music Drunken Caribbean Rock 'n Roll for as long as I've been listening to him, even before fans called themselves Parrot Heads.

[Jamaica Mistaica - Jimmy Buffett]

Was this on your greatest hits?

It doesn't really work that way. That's like someone hating bagpipes so they listen to something else with similar a "feel" to Scottish/Irish music and saying it suits their tastes better so it's okay to swap it out. Just because something makes them think of Mel Gibson screaming about freedom doesn't mean it can be slotted in as "native" music.

What does that mean anyway? What's "native" Florida music? They have Lynyrd Skynyrd, they don't need anyone else. It's not like you can't listen to anything but Buffett or the Beach Boys when you're on the beach.

That song's actually based on a true story. Not about drinking.

[stop appropriating californian music or something w/e w/e lynyrd skynyrd is all anyone needs]

So your goal in getting into the Florida spirit by way of "native" Floridian music is to latch onto a stereotype and choose what is accurate based on the stereotype.

No, it's not the same at all.

It does have the advantage of being music made by an actual Floridian band that doesn't rely on sand and sun and alligators and dolphins.

[is this real life]

You're forgetting people who move to Florida to retire and die.

[Like Will would one day, if not for this Florida being the clusterfuck that it is. Is the "and die" part a little depressing? Maybe. But so is this entire talk, this is so Goddamn depressing Will can't believe it's happening.]

You can't be bothered to research into Florida music fitting the "experience" that's not one of the biggest names out there but you're talking about what people come to the state for.
Makes sense.

[Stupid, depressing sense.

So not much sense.

[Your mom's chest hair makes alien sense.]

Who said anything about trailers? Where did trailers come into play? Trailers are a bad idea in the first place. Hurricanes and all.

No, trailers are cheap. Has nothing to do with belief in defying physics, has everything to do with money. In both good and bad lights.
Same as just about everything else.
