I'm not going to waste time asking if there is a way off this backwater planet, it doesn't seem as if anyone has managed something so basic thus far. I don't understand why the natives of this planet seem to be proud of themselves as if this planet is something special despite being so primitive.

But it seems as I am stuck here for the foreseeable future so tell me what this planet has to offer, I'm curious to know.

Death and law enforcement, that seems like an interesting combination. What makes you an expertise on death?

Restoring the deceased to true life isn't possible. [Except under special circumstances, but she doesn't talk about those.] Those with power and little wisdom can drag the Dead back into this world as reanimated corpses, or as shadowy spirits. My purpose is to lay them back to rest again, or bind them if that's not possible.

[What Sabriel's dancing around is that she can raise the dead- but she won't.]

That's what I thought. I know there have been many in my galaxy who have sought immortality but as far as I know, no one has been successful.

How do you lay them back to rest again?

Regardless of what people want to believe, all living things die.

And commanding the Dead to rest is not so different than ordering them to rise.

So you use magic to accomplish this? I've heard of witches before, but I can't say I've ever met one in person.

You're likely to meet several here. We might come from different worlds and use different methods, but mages are not uncommon.

Those with my... particular skills are fewer though.

I'm not surprised, those with any power over death are few in my galaxy as well despite how many seek immortality.

A pointless quest- nothing is, or will ever be truly immortal.

I found the best way to achieve immortality is the legacy one leaves behind.

Then you're wiser than quite a few people.

I like to think of myself as practical and realistic. I see no reason to waste my time in the fruitless endeavor of eternal life.

Good. Practicality is always a helpful trait.

I would have to agree. Delusions set you up for unrealistic expectations and, ultimately, failure.
