2. Tater Tot-Tinas

so I had this bizarre dream last night where tater tots and chunks of salt were falling from the sky, and nobody except me cared so I was running around trying to gather them

because who would waste good tater tots?

And this guy who kinda looked and sounded like my brother was there, too.

anyway long story short I ended up cooking a bunch of tater tots, sorry to my housemates but they taste really good especially with bacon and cheese on top

and now I'm wondering if the dream had some sort of meaning. Do the tater tots represent my unconscious desire to go back home and back to my school and have cafeteria tots? Does the appearance of that mysterious man that kinda looks and sounds like an older version of my brother mean I'm peeking into the future???

is there somewhere I can look this up? because I'm curious

I'm kinda glad for that. I'm honestly not sure what I'd do if I had to face down someone like that myself. i had a gun pointed at me once and it was the scariest thing ever.

Not yet. I'm kinda nervous to put my stuff out there, honestly. i've only ever written for myself, so the idea of having an audience? makes me nervous.

That reminds me though, how are your powers working out for you? Learning to use those can really save your life around here, as sad as it is to say.

Well no pressure! When you think you're ready to share, I'm sure you'll get plenty of good feedback. That's what they call "creative process", right? (I wouldn't know so well, I'm not any kind of artist!)

It was back home, actually. long story. the person who did it ended up getting arrested, so it all turned out well.

I've been making friends and making some extra money on the side thanks to my powers! I guess the power of home-cooked food is appealing. and food is a nice connection to home and to good memories.

I hope so. i've also never put my work out for critique. not intentionally anyway, my sister reads my stuff despite that.

Thank God, and here I was worried I'd let you down! I guess the realities of the world hit even the less "superhero" of us, huh?

That's right, your family owns a restaurant, don't they. Hey, maybe I'll pop by to try some of that cooking! I have to admit, I'm not much of a cook myself, but I love good food as much as anyone. Tried making anything new, lately?

Yeah, despite us doing our best to stay out of trouble. sometimes trouble just finds out.

That's great. I'm glad you get along with your siblings so well, sounds like you have a real tight-knit family.

It's hard to choose! hamburgers were the only thing I made back home, since mom and dad did all the cooking for our family. dad had particular ways he liked to do some things, especially around holidays.

we are, and I'm glad for that. my siblings and I have rarely been apart since they were born, so being separated from them has been pretty hard.

I bet as a chef your dad was pretty particular about how he cooked for big holidays like that. Something of an expert, yeah?

I know it's tough. Maybe writing stories about your time together will help? Even though it's not your usual kind of story.

ESPECIALLY Thanksgiving. that's his favorite holiday, and it takes him almost all week to pick out the turkey then figure out how to cook it. it ended up getting ruined a few times, though.

I could do that- and spice it up, too. we can go on adventures. i wrote one once where we outwitted a zombie horde.

Oh boy, I remember learning about Thanksgiving, before! It's that huge cooking holiday, right? We don't really have it where I come from. But it reminds me a little bit of a serious Christmas dinner, so I can see why he would be so particular. Maybe a little too much, though, from the sound of it.

Be careful what you wish for- this place has a tendency for those kinds of things to actually happen.

Yeah! most people get the day off work and school to enjoy it. i really look forward to it every year, but you're right, Dad can go a little overboard sometimes. one year he got drunk on absinthe and was talking to the turkey like it was real.

yeah, Dad tends to talk to inanimate objects when he's alone in general. he thinks we don't know, but all of us do. it's pretty cute, and my sister picked up the habit from him. that particular Thanksgiving was weird in general.

to be fair, we kind of weren't that day. our landlord promised us free rent for a few months if we pretended to be his family... long story, again... but Dad got stuck playing the cook and we couldn't exactly pay much attention to him during dinner.

Mr. Fischoeder was trying to get back together with an old flame of his, but she liked to be a homewrecker. so he figured if he pretended to have a family she'd be more likely to want to be with him. it went badly

I hope so. my life back home was pretty peaceful

That's definitely one of the worse relationship kindling plots I've heard of. And I've seen my share of drama.

Then again, I'm the last person to ask for that kind of advice.

honestly I wouldn't have agreed to it but getting that much free rent would've made a big difference for us. i just wasn't good at pretending to be someone else's kid, though. i love my dad too much for that.
