What do you believe in? Really believe? What do you devote your time to?

( A pause; he's having a sip of cocoa. )

Now I've been here a few weeks, I've gotten to wondering about that. There's a lot here that's the same as back home, with a few obvious differences thrown in. Advertising, TV, that kind of thing. Back where I come from, what you spend your time on and what consumes your thoughts matters. There's a lot of shit you might not realise how much it matters to you. Mattering matters, if you want to make it sound like some bullshit affirmation.

So here's the thing: what if the reason we come through those porters with the powers we got is because people believe we will? What if we only start fighting crime or committing them because people believe we will?

( A long exhale, almost a verbal shrug. ) Or maybe it's bullshit. I dunno.

I've met them here. [ kaneki isn't exactly religious and never met an actual god back home, so he has no opinion about his universe's situation when it comes to that ]

It's quite strange at first, yes, but you end up getting used to it. Sort of.

Wonder just how much "fucked up" there has to be before people stop being able to get used to it.

( Disturbing as hell, but he's full to the teeth with complaining and grumbling. Tends to get exactly nowhere good. )

There are a lot of examples I could give you, but I think it's best for you to do it at your own pace. [ before breaking his mind completely ]

Loki was here. Lucifer isn't "god" but he and his brothers were here and they come from a religion. We have had demi-gods, like a son of Poseidon. Of course there is Lachesis and her sisters, Clotho and Atropos. Death was here, too, if you consider her a god.

Believe me, I'm used to things not going at my own pace.

Shit. ( More contemplative than cursing. ) Death would be a god. Just about anything could be, if enough people devote time and thought and energy on it.

Well, maybe things can go much easier for you now. [ or not. Like murders on the network and everything else that usually happens. But hey, at least Shadow can ignore it if he wants to ]

Maybe. I think she's more... inevitable than a goddess. [ everything dies ]

No reason she can't be both. I mean, more than one culture worships death.

I suppose that's true. The question is, if she cares at all about worshiping.

If she's a god she would. If she's not, who knows.
