[One teenage girl with long brown hair draped down the sides of her face is staring at her new phone incredulously. Her tone one of disbelief and sarcasm.]

"Don't worry, we're the [Insert air quotes here] 'good guys'"? Seriously? Talk about mega government conspiracies. I'm not buying any of that bullshit.

[There's a pause as she reaches for something off camera]

First thing's first, if anyone has a lighter I can borrow, I want to burn the shit out of this file. [she waves the back of her personnel file in front of the camera briefly] I don't know how they got my information but I'm not about to share it. And if someone can lend me enough cash for a flight to Los Angeles, it'll be great.

[she turns away from the phone, seemingly about to end her message before turning back]

Oh, right. If you're my roommate, I only have one rule: Don't touch my stuff.

Yes, well, you wouldn't want to. I'm their friend and even I don't want to. It's not important to this either way.

[ she regrets mentioning it, a little, so she moves to change the topic, pointing at the lighter. ] So. If you're burning you'll want a safe place to do it. The patio may work best.

Sounds good.

[Violet is more than happy to accommodate the change of topic. She turns towards Number 21 to look at the front yard and heads towards it with the lighter and file in tow]

Isn't this pretty big for a government house?

[she finds a spot in the center of the patio and kneels down, holding the edge of the file close to the lighter before she starts to flick it on]

[ kanaya follows behind, looking up at it. it's pretty much identical to the one she's lived in for a month, she'd hardly know they're different if she weren't so familiar with space. ]

I wouldn't really have a base of comparison to say. But they're meant to house five people, so I'd hate to think what they;d be like smaller.

It'd be like a crappy college dorm room.

[She lets go as soon as the edge catches fire and watches intently as the fire starts to lick across the file]

[ kanaya takes another drag of her cigarette as she watches the flames begin to dance. ]

Again, something I lack a concrete frame of reference to. Outside of movies, maybe, and those never give you a truly accurate picture of how things are.

Probably things you take for granted here. Well, a general here, as none of them are quite the same Earth.

[Violet watches the fire a while longer before turning to look at Kanaya]

You don't have colleges where you're from?

[glowsferatu]

[ she smiles she offers in answer is more of a mockery of the idea than an actual smile. ]

Where I'm from we don't have a where I'm from anymore. But when we did, they had a very different approach to secondary education. More a mandatory draft, really.

Most armies you'll know would be gnats in comparison to the Alternian Fleet. My kind was conquering galaxies before the first star twinkled in your universe. [ said with a very particular brand of alien arrogance, but it's punctuated with a shrug. ]

Not that it kept them all from dying out, of course.

What can I say? These things happen.

[ and she takes another drag off her cigarette with a million yard stare. then, before the silence gets too awkward: ] I'm Kanaya, by the way. I seem to have neglected mentioning that before.

[She's all right with awkward silences. It works out sometimes. She stands and uses the tip of her shoe to nudge at some bits of the file that aren't completely burned through yet, feeding it more oxygen so the fire comes back to life.]

Are you the last of your kind?

[glowsferatu]

One of them. Certainly the last of my specific variation, but jadebloods were never terribly common to begin with.

[ if violet noticed, kanaya never really smiles with her teeth, but when she opens her mouth her fangs are clearly oversized. not as much as they would be in her native form, but they're the kind you'd expect to see more on a vampire. ]

Makes you unique I guess.

[she doesn't want to imagine what it's like to be the last of anything. She does notice the teeth but doesn't say anything about it.]

[ she makes a noise somewhere between a scoff and a chuckle, but it turns to a cough as she's in the middle of blowing smoke. once she recovers, she replies with a smile, like it never happened. ]

You have no idea. [ she looks at her nails as she lets her glow out, but as it's the middle of a sunny day, it doesn't register very clearly. more a slight shimmer unless she steps in the shadows. ]

[Violet watches her from the corner of her eyes, curious but not too intently so]

Yeah. I don't.

[She turns to return the lighter to Kanaya]

Thanks for the light.

[glowsferatu]

[ she takes it and drops it back in her purse, kneeling down to put her cigarette out in the file's ashes. ]

Was it something in there that you didn't want anyone else seeing?

Everything.

[Violet looks at the ashes that remain]

It's nobody else's business.

[glowsferatu]

No, I suppose not. But it can be useful to know what about you is known.

[attractedtodarkness]

Why's that? It's not going to help with anything.

[glowsferatu]

Depends on what the information was. If there's nothing much there, there's nothing much to know, and little point in burning it.

If it's something someone might've been able to use, it's at least good to be aware of what they'll be looking at. More for defense than offense.

[ and a good defense is important when you're a lousy manipulator who's known too many in your time. ]

[Violet shakes her head]

It's just personal shit I don't want people to know.

I suppose that's fair. I doubt many of us would care to have the contents of our histories publicized.

[ that's one lucky thing about the last universe ending, some things are no longer out there for anyone to find. ]

Exactly. I don't need my roommates snooping around.

Did you keep yours?

The only person I'd have to worry about seeing it is my girlfriend, and it's nothing she doesn't know already. I hadn't seen a need to destroy it.
