Point number two: Just ... think of this as one of those ice-breaking exercises. You know the ones where everybody's awkward and doesn't wanna talk but you gotta answer some stupid question? One of those. Just. Just out of idle curiosity: what is your favorite thing about Earth? It can be anything, doesn't matter how small. In fact, it might be the small things that are the most important. Asking for a friend who isn't used to seeing it so ... intact.

[He counts out his fingers to four, thinks again, and subtracts one.]

Aaand number three: gimme the skinny on good places to eat around Maurita Falls? Extra points for good ramen joints. And I mean the real stuff, none of that instant business.

I hate to bring you more bad news ... but they got the colonies too.

[Oh, that is bad news. Logically, there's no reason to think that they'd even be talking about the same sort of structures, certainly not that the destruction of one means anything for his universe; emotionally, his heart seizes up anyway. Probably has something to do with how few people mention space colonies period.]

I'm sorry. [Again, not really a sufficient thing to say in the face of all-consuming darkness (that consumed his home!!!!) but what can you really do.] That's horrible. I-- where do you live, if not on the planet or the colonies?

There's one city left, we just call it The City. What was left of humanity gathered beneath the Traveler—it's a giant alien artifact that saved us, somehow—and built it up from nothing. It's nothing like what used to be but ... it's something.

...Just so you know, that means something a little different here than it would in your universe. Has anyone told you about the history of the Porter?

Well that could be confusing. Hit me up with the newbie speech, then, if you got one.

Well, the short story is that this isn't the first world to have imPorts. In AD 2008, imPorts first started appearing in 'The City,' a nameless, essentially lawless city in roughly the same location as this world's New York. They eventually learned that they were brought there by Lachesis, one of the Fates from Greek mythology, as part of a war with her sister Atropos. Atropos destroyed the original universe, but Lachesis escaped with many of the imPorts into this world in approximately AD 2014. [He says his years digit by digit, out of habit-- two zero zero eight, two zero one four.] The history is a little hard to follow, but essentially Lachesis rewrote reality in this universe to create the current Porter, which continues to bring people from different universes in and out of this world, seemingly at random. Lachesis herself is apparently in hiding. A very small number of people remain in this universe who remember the City, but they've passed the information down as much as they can. Recently, we've had reason to suspect that Atropos has surfaced and begun influencing events in this world, so people are more aware of the history than they might have been.

...It wasn't much of a speech, I'm sorry. [Again with these apologies... he attaches a link to the post.] I've only been in this world since March of this year, so this is all second hand. Kaneki-- you're speaking to him elsewhere on this post-- takes notes about what imPorts have discovered in this world and what was carried over from the last one, but they're very detailed.
