WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE WORLD?

Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

[The video opens up in the early dawning hours. Futaba is still clad in pajamas, her hair mussed from sleep. But there's a wild grin stretching across her face and a wicked gleam in her eye.]

So...it's my brother's birthday. [Her voice is a hushed, but excited, whisper.] If you know Goro, make sure to say something.

As for me? I'm going to be obnoxious. He better appreciate it; I got up early.

[And with that she starts sneaking through their home, taking careful steps towards a closed bedroom door. She holds a finger to her lips, winking at the camera before sliding the door open. It's still dark in the room, the fingertips of dawn just now slipping through the curtains--

And then Futaba throws on the light.]

Wake up sleepy head!!

[The next few moments of the clip are chaos. A shout from Goro, Futaba running--and was that a glimpse of another person's curly hair? It's hard to tell with the camera motion putting everything into a high-speed blur before it finally cuts with a yelp from Futaba.]

[The feed clicks on to the view of a young boy around 10-12 with a black and red cat perched on his shoulders. The cat isn't looking at the feed or anything really at all, instead just looking content relaxing there. Curiously the boy's left arm seems to be wrapped up in some sort of cocoon? Sun gives the camera a wave with his good arm, smile bright on his face.]

Heya! I got a quick question for everyone! So it's cool they already set me up with part-time job here, but about the uh, those government people and that hero stuff...

[He look up, contemplative about them as he goes on.]

Do we really gotta do that nonsense? It just sounds like the plot of bad Brycen-Man movie to me. Besides that...

[He doesn't just trust big organization's like that. He shakes his head not wanting to get into it, this was supposed to be a quick question after all.]

I guess the question is just if I gotta do all that or not. I know goin' home ain't an option, but no amount of money could make me wanna go fight crime or whatever else those heroes do.

So I've been doin' some thinkin' and it's like, way late for this question but how many fellow bucketheads we got 'round here, anyway? I'm talkin' your 'bots, droids, whatever you call 'em. I'll be generous and include super intelligent AI, but you're on thin ice.

And if every other robot has ported out you are free to tell me 'bout how robots work for you back where you're from, and how much cooler and more handsome I am than them. Actually you're free to tell me that anyway because let's face it, it's me.

I never really gave a lot of thought to it. I never thought I'd still be here at this point...and back home I was still fifteen--almost sixteen.

[She's just inside the camera's field of vision, off to one side. She's on her bed, leaning against the headboard, a large stuffed narwhal gripped tight to her chest.]

But I'm going to be an adult in nine days. I know it's just some arbitrary thing, that being eighteen doesn't make us any more adult than we were the day before...It's just weird. We--my friends and I--were so focused on the fact that adults we knew being terrible that I never thought about what I'd do as an adult.

How can I be better than the adults I knew? Can I be...?

[Camera on to reveal Pikachu standing on a table surrounded by the usual assortment of takeout cups that he’s shaking pathetically as he paces.]

Okay, so I’ve been thinking a lot about that riddle we got before everything went all apocalyptic on us, and there were a bunch of us brilliant detectives that got together to solve it, and that was probably one of the top five best experiences I’ve had… But don’t read too much into the fact that I’ve had very few experiences. ‘Cause of the amnesia.

[He tosses an empty cup away.] Anywho, that was a good feeling! It was community! It was understanding! It was a bunch of geniuses putting their heads together and coming up with something great. We caught lightning in a bottle and now we’re not doing anything with it.

[He lifts a dramatically pointing hand.] But I'm here to propose something similar to Aegis or the other organizations running around here, but for only things on a smaller scale. The stuff that people can't pay as much attention to because it isn’t buildings blowing up or monsters getting ‘ported in. And you’re probably thinking "okay sure, Pikachu, why don’t we just join the police," and to that I say, “No.” I want a coalition of unaffiliated-except-to-each-other detectives, spread out across the porter cities, sharing information, and solving crimes. The stuff we should’ve been doing when we first got here, but we had to get clout first.

[He rolls his eyes.] Look, I’m gonna level with y’all. I can’t work in retail forever, and I like the idea of a community versus all of us doing our own thing. The hardboiled “don’t-need-nobody” film noir detective thing- while totally valid and I admit I’m into the aesthetic too- is kind of played out.

[At last! A cup with liquid in it. He downs the last drop and wipes the foam off with the back of his arm.] Look if you’re not into that, then maybe all the detectives should meet up once a month, get coffee, and talk about our black tarpit souls and brood. I just want something. Anything. I kinda miss having partners.

[He tosses the empty cup over his shoulder.] Speaking of coffee, who's up for delivering me some? I'm adorable. You should totally wanna help a guy out here.

[ The video opens to Haru's room, soft, feminine shades of blues and pinks all about her bedding and many pieces of her decor. As usual the plant stand is visible at the edge of the screen, a Venus flytrap sitting neatly with its trap currently closed. Rest in pieces, little fly.

Haru is laying on her stomach comfortably, a notebook to her side that's got different highlighted portions and a thicker textbook tucked underneath it. She glances into the feed with that ever affectionate smile of hers. ]

It seems for Americans turning twenty-one is an important coming of age event. It's the age you're legally and socially considered an adult, yes? Back home in Japan that age is twenty. In fact, there's a national holiday called Coming of Age Day surrounding that milestone. It's usually held the second Monday of January and municipal governments holds ceremonies at local city halls to congratulate and celebrate those becoming adults.

Participation has dwindled quite a bit over the years and nobody really dresses up formally for it anymore besides a lot of the women, but... I still think it's an important event to celebrate.

[ Her cheeks begin to a glow a shade of red, but her smile widens. ]

I'll be twenty on December 5th myself. Maybe not quite an adult in America, but officially exiting my teenage years. For that I'd like to celebrate this birthday with my friends once again and invite you all to a dinner party at my house in Heropa. We'll have food and drink, of course, but any suggestions would be great as well! I haven't held many birthday parties of my own choosing, after all.

[ And she adds, giggling: ] A furisode would be nice to wear for this occasion, but far too warm for Florida weather.

Since the world is apparently ending, I have two questions:

1. Who is actually planning to do something about it, and how do we sign up?

2. Who's throwing the Halloween parties? I know a couple hundred imPorts that need one or five.

I apologize to those that had commented in these threads, but this post's aim is to begin the IC discussion process. I look forward to future posts that will reflect the solution in game!]

[There's a click as the video turns on and the faint recording light reflects on the visor of a helmet beside a calm looking man. He pushes it out of the way with his metal right hand and nods to the screen.] Hello, I've heard I've been here before. Sorry to anyone who knew me, I came back without those memories. I don't foresee them coming back. To those who have never seen me before, I'm Shiro. A pleasure to meet you, despite the circumstances behind it.

[He leans back in his seat and it makes the scar across the bridge of his nose stand out. His hair is cut short except for a shock of white in the front. He glances to the side briefly and back into at the viewers. He's clearly used to speaking for an audience.] But that's not why I turned this on. ...I have a few questions and hopefully, someone has an answer.

First, I'd like to know what we've found out so far about these rocks coming from space. Do we even know where they're coming from? I've seen a few types and have an idea what they do but comparing experiences and confirming it would be better than going on an assumption.

[The man pauses here, and says a little less formally. His voice a little quieter.]

And I'd like to ask how often people from the same universe arrive here from different points in time. Do we ever gain the time that we're missing? I'd just like to know what to expect. Thank you.

If anyone knew Utena, some of her things are still here but her signal is gone. I'm sure she'd want her friends to have something if they wanted it...I'll be here for anyone that wants to come by.

[ PRIVATE: It's nearly 3 in the morning when Poe finds himself outside the porter building. Usually he would make a series of phone calls, but the late hour means he just sends texts. So his closest friends will get a brief text message that says simply: ]

i'm back

[ PUBLIC: The next morning he makes a post on the network itself, for everyone. He's on video, standing outside his home - Base One - just outside Nonah. And he looks annoyed. ]

So. Firstly, uh, hey everyone, I'm back. So that's the good news.

The bad news is, the company I hired to handle my affairs in case of a terminal port out have really fucked up. They had instructions to send out some stuff if I was gone for over a month. Which, well, I wasn't - two weeks is not a month - but they went and sent them all anyway.

So uh - if any of you got packages from me? Please just ignore them?

For everyone else, I would advise avoiding "Just Will It" to handle your affairs. I thought it was neat that they had a special "imPorts only Port-Out Package", but apparently they have no idea what the hell they are doing.

If anyone has advice for how to better handle this kind of thing, I'm all ears. Because my set up did not go according to plan. Is there an import-run business for this sort of thing? Maybe they would get that sending my will out early would be a piss-poor move.

[The video opens with a view of a kitchen, standard for the housing in Heropa. Nothing seems amiss at first until a blur comes bounding through, nearly toppling over a chair in its wake. It tears through the kitchen, jumping on the counter and bounding onto the table set up in the breakfast nook.

It's chaos, the whirlwind only stopping momentarily, proving to be a cat that seems to only be willing to stop its unholy terror to clean herself.

The video shifts, turning back on the camera-girl--Futaba.

[Having just awoken from a dreaming session that's apparently borne no results, Ronan is draped lazily across the hammock in the Meadows' garden, a full-grown raven perched on his shoulder with her face tucked against his neck. She's still sleeping.]

Hypothetically...

[Ronan isn't quite looking at the camera, but it's the network he's addressing.]

[Max has been taking it easy the last few weeks, especially as the last month marked an entire year he's been living in an alternate universe. It makes you thoughtful and he knows that, even if he's trying to not get to thoughtful in a negative way. So he chooses to focus on something fun and simple and hopefully not leading to anything tragic.]

Can you believe we're three months into 2019? Back home it was still 2015, so adding a year and three more to my life makes me think I should definitely be legal for drinks by now, right? No? Guess waiting another 18 months it is.

[He's smiling with a shrug like he does not really mind that at all.]

But with the big Four-One a hop, skip, and a weekend away, I was thinking about what we all should be thinking. Pranks. Great pranks.

Tell me about all the best pranks you've done, seen or heard of. I miss the days when me and friends would cover the floor of the kitchens with shaving cream to see if our commander would fall on his ass.

Give me something fun to laugh at on a Friday night, I beseech thee all.

Okay, when did coffee get so complicated that a coffee shop has approximately fifty-billion different options for ordering? I mean, Alfred used to make a few special blends back home... but the options and variety these days are just insane.

Petty, maybe, I guess. Or maybe I'm just still too many decades behind.

[The video opens to the inside of a bakery that the natives know as the Slayer's Cake, a bakery that not one imPort has ever seen before. The interior, to anyone who's ever walked into a modern-day bakery, is a little strange—there's very little electricity, with electric torch-like lights all along the walls, and the display uses wooden boxes instead of clear plastic.

Molly carries the camera over to the display, and zooms in on a collection of cake pops that—

—is that almond bark from an actual almond tree?]

Is it normal for places to suddenly just pop into existence around here? First a whole city, now this bakery. Not that I'm complaining about the bakery, although—

[And he just waves a hand at the cake pops.]

When they said they had "almond bark" I wasn't expecting real bark.

[A quiet huff of breath, and Molly turns the camera around onto his face.]

Is anyone else finding this all a little bit weird?

I'm really not this talkative most of the time but...It's my birthday today. The second one I've spent here.

Anyone else think celebrating birthdays here is kind of, y'know, weird? I mean if and when we go home, all that time is lost anyway, right? I mean, I'll be fifteen again when I get back...if I get back.

[It's officially the day after Valentine's Day. And you know what that means: Discount Candy. Also known as a day that should truly be a holiday all it's own. See this <3 ???   <3 looks nothing like an actual heart.  Neither does this ❤.   And none of all the 'heart-shaped' things I see in all the stores lately look like a real heart.   The  ❤ is such a powerful symbol though.  It represents love, relationships, all of that.  If there's a zigzag through one - 💔 -  it means 'heartbreak' - loss, endings, pain.   I feel like I should be seeing more of those broken ones in the stores.   Valentine's day makes a lot of people feel more loss too.

It must be obvious that I'm missing someone.  Not a romantic relationship.   Friends.  One was like a brother to me and they both gave me the sense of family that helped me get through the day.    And now, they're just gone. I know I can't rely on them returning.

This Valentine's day, I think I'll stick to the symbolism and make skewered beef hearts for my dinner.  It's a very lean organ.  After Valentine's I can treat myself to discount chocolate.  At least that's something to look forward to, right?

Is anyone else doing anything special to get through the 14th?
