Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

Some of us were brought here with our own powers, some were granted them by this place. It's been a conversation that I've had on multiple occasions since being brought here. I'm interested in knowing whether any power has changed -- if someone that was brought here with their own power lost it or it was altered in some way.

A recent conversation made me aware of the fact that while there is a large community of people here with powers of some sort, that some of us had them already before we arrived here and therefore know how to use them, and that others only got their powers when they arrived here. [Which makes them humans with powers, not mutants, but that's not a distinction he's going to get into right now.]

Which got me to thinking. Perhaps those of us who know how to use our powers could help those who don't learn how. Figure out the specifics, that sort of thing. Or does that happen already?

Hello, I’ve been told that new arrivals are encouraged to reach out and see if anyone else they know has already come here. My name is Jean Grey, and I come from another Earth.

[ It is at least half true, and more besides. She’s used to complicated truths, and the bending walls of time and reality and the far reaches of the Omniverse. Jean doesn’t always love it, but it could be worse. It could be so much worse. Everything she’s touched and sensed since waking has not been anywhere near as bad as some of the times she’d woken. From the ocean, the ground, alternate universes, future timelines, past ones, completely outside of all of them. ]

I'm seeking any of my family and friends who might already be here.

I’d, also, like to reach out to those currently running things. I would like to learn more about what has been happening here the last few years, and to the world I heard came before this one, at least to the best of my ability. I appreciate anyone’s help that would be willing.

So, uh, I'm Stiles, this is Derek. Say hi, Derek. [The husky raises its head and yawns, which is apparently its version of hello.] So, I heard the next Swear-In's gonna be on the moon, which is simultaneously awesome and terrifying - I also heard that Swear-Ins are kind of a lightning rod for attacks? As cool as having 'he died in space' on my grave would be, it would also be cool to not die. But I haven't declared one way or another, and I'm not sure how long I can fail to decide to register or not.

But, uh - [Segues are for losers, Stiles just swings his laptop around so the screen's visible to the camera. It's open to a Bwitter account called @StilesWatch with an impressive follower count that's apparently dedicated to posting candids of teen heart-throb Stiles, mostly Stiles with dogs from Sunshine Therapy, although there's already one of him with Derek.] Yeah, I don't know what to do with this. I know we're all supposed to be kind of celebrities, but this is a lot. Jesus, I can't even get anyone to go on a date with me back home [HE DID NOT ACTUALLY MEAN TO SAY THAT OUT LOUD] and they're selling t-shirts, which I'm pretty sure is illegal? Definitely no one asked me if I wanted my face on a t-shirt. [Help??]

Okay so like, I'm hoping this is just going to be old news but I just gotta say it, and you know what? The less people in the ER for dumb reasons the happier I am.

First things first: yeah, you can totally use duct tape to stop a wound from bleeding. But that's not going to fix the hole that's bleeding. So be sure to pay your friendly neighborhood hospital a visit before things get gross. Or just, change it? Please.

If you read something on Bwitter about some crazy health hack, it's probably not true. Also don't lie to your doctor if they can' literally sense whether or not all you've drank for the past week is cabbage brine juice. Also? Don't drink cabbage brine juice. I had one guy tell me that's how he got his toe back and he didn't believe me when I said I reattached it. Totally convinced it was a new toe he regrew like a lizard.

I really don't care why something is somewhere it shouldn't be, don't lie to me and tell me that it isn't there. Like, maybe that works on other doctors - but also don't lie to them, why do people lie? - but I can tell and it's less awkward for all of us if I don't have to point that out.

Anyway, PSA aside, I'm thinking about going out this weekend so, uh, any recommendations for clubs would be great.

[ There she is in front of the same shed as last time. This time she's wearing clothes that fit this world better, and she's dyed her hair brown. She seems a little more relaxed this video. ]

So, been here a month. Still getting a lot of things down, and a general thanks to everyone who's been helping.

I'm actually making this video for a reason other than to update you all on my absolutely thrilling progress.

Last month Lucina and Utena informed everyone of the teen-night at the bowling alley, and as far as I can tell it was a huge success. Lucina and I talked and she mentioned that there aren't many chances for young imPorts to socialise, and mentioned that future similar events would be a good idea. I agree and want to help make that sort of thing happen, but I can't really do that without feedback from others.

First, I'd like to know what types of places you guys think would be good to have get-togethers at. Preferably places without active availability to alcohol - not that they're ruled out, just that I think it's going to be a little harder to talk adults into letting us chill there for a few hours.

I'd also like to know if you guys are interested in things like camping and just having pot-luck style parties at parks, or if you want to keep it to things like bowling and arcades, or even just making sure any food is prepared by someone who knows what they're doing. I won't lie, if something can be done that doesn't require an entry fee, that's going to be a lot easier to set up.

What are some places and activities you absolutely want no part of? I mean, I think most people can agree that cave exploring with a bunch of teens, possibly in the middle of nowhere, is a recipe for disaster, and I can see why some people would want no part of it. [ She leans in just a bit and stage whispers. ] Even if it is my idea of a fun time.

[ She then returns to her former position, and former volume. ]

And lastly on the askance front, I'd like to ask for help from both my fellow young imPorts and from any adults who might be willing to chaperone, or just give advice.

There's only so much I can do on my own, and I'm located in De Chima. It would be a lot of help to have people in other porter cities who can help me with checking out places, and talking to business owners to see if they'd let us set up a night to hang out there without calling in reporters and making a big deal out of it. It would also be a real help to have the help of adults when it comes to sitting down and talking to business owners. Both because they're more likely to take adults seriously, and because no matter how much reading I do ahead of time, I'm not going to catch on to some attempts to take advantage of things that someone with more experience under their belt might.

[ She looks like she's about to say her parting words for a moment, then pauses. ]

Oh, and I do actually have one more thing to ask. Does anyone know some type of flexible work an imPort might be able to get on the weekends? I have my part time job, but I doubt that it'll be enough to do all this on, and I'm certainly not going to ask for help on the financial side of this until I've done things. It's probably best I find something flexible, too, because I'm going to need to make sure I have time to train my abilities.

Hey, everyone. Blue Beetle and Batman here -- we’re the new representatives of the Justice League, and we figured it was about time that we say hello to everyone - including you newbies - and talk a little about what we’re all about. Like I said, we’re the Justice League. We’re a team of imPorts who’ve volunteered our time to work together to help out in times of crises and to keep as many people as possible safe… kind of like we did after the nukes last year. We’ve got the power to make a change, so that’s exactly what we try to do.

If you want to join up and be put on active field work, you’ve got to be Registered. [ Jaime shrugs. ] That’s just the law. But if you’re not Registered, it doesn’t mean you can’t get involved - there’s plenty to do behind the scenes and for outreach work. More importantly, you don’t have to be registered if you’re new to having powers and all you’re looking for is someone to help you control them. We figure that’s just as good community service as anything else, and we’re here to help you as best we can.

Now… this isn’t a job. None of us get paid. We’re just people who have the resources to do what we do, which means that if you’re interested, maybe we can help you too. [ Jaime glances behind him at Batman, then turns back to the camera. Batman nods, finally speaking up. It’s a low-pitched and distorted sound, run through a vocoder.]

Not 9-to-5 like Aegis. We’re superheroes, not police. Registered trainees can do field work, but not as full members. Separate team we supervise. [ And she gestures for Jaime to go on, now that she’s said her elaboration. ]

Field work’s a pretty flexible term. If there’s a natural disaster, we’re there. If something goes buggy with the Porter, or if an imPort, I dunno, does something and everyone suddenly goes crazy and starts doing crimes - something that’s happened before - we’re there too. Like Batman said, we’re not military, and we’re not the police - but if something goes wrong, we step in. Registered trainees are people who just join up and the people who are too young to know the ropes yet. I won’t lie. Fieldwork is dangerous. Really dangerous, depending on what it is. And we want to make sure that everyone’s ready for it. But if you’re gonna do it at all, you might as well do it where you’ve got other people watching your back.

Let us know if you’ve got any questions or if you’re interested in joining up. It’s a serious commitment, but it’s one we think is worth it. [ He pauses, then gives the camera an awkward little salute. Batman just. Presses a hand to her forehead, and flicks a quick wave with the other. ] Um, yeah! That’s about it.

[The video starts with a young girl, a teenager, with fiery hair cut into a bob and green eyes. To some she might look familiar, though perhaps much younger than they’re used to, to others she’s just some pretty stranger. There's a pink haze around the edges of the video as well as Jean.

So, I’m just going to cut the chase. I’m Jean Grey. No, I’m probably not the Jean Grey you know. Possibly. Multiple universes and timelines can make things really confusing sometimes. So, uh, sorry? [She shrugs. The comm kind of floats around on its own, bobbing ever so slightly as she broadcasts. Giving a clear view of Nonah below.]

I noticed there are a few X-Men around and wondered if we’d set up anywhere in particular or if we’re just all doing our own thing since we can be “normal”? [complete with air quotes]

[She starts to float the comm closer to her to shut it off before stopping.] Can anyone recommend a good old fashioned diner? Any city doesn’t matter. Thanks.

[What hasn't Betsy seen at this point? She's checked off the space, alternate realities, body swapping, alien invasions, and apocalypses on her multiverse bingo card. This mutant has seen just about all the universe -- the multiverse -- has to offer. She looks into the camera with an expression that seems to suggest a laid back air, then quirks a violet eyebrow up; all of her hair is violet, as are the irises of her eyes. She has her device levitating far enough away from her face that it's not showing every pore of her skin, but you don't have to squint to see her, either. She's been here for one day, so here's her first impression on the network. Finally.

She's in her house in Maurtia Falls sitting on a couch, a pillow with a Union Jack pattern on it on her lap, with a plate of sushi by her side that she's still working on finishing -- but not while broadcasting this video, because talking with one's mouth full is rude.

You know, as long as I keep not hearing the term 'Mojo' here, this universe might not be so bad. Call me optimistic.

[The comment comes in a deadpan tone, with an accent that is English -- she sounds like someone from Maldon, for those here who are good at placing accents more specifically than just 'yep, she's from England all right'.

She idly swings and spins loosely in one hand with what looks to be the hilt of a sword -- more specifically, a katana, for those with an eye of familiarity with that type -- but one without a blade attached to it. Because that's exactly what it is. Her other hand is resting on the table.]

Travelling through time and space is generally what we call 'another day with the X-Men' back where I'm from. So I guess I have that going for me too; how lucky. However, due to the unannounced nature of my, mm, visit here, it would have been nice to have time to pack some essentials. [It's always good time for a sarcastic joke.]

As for anyone else here...

[She trails off for a moment.]

Tell me: What's your favorite or most interesting part about this universe? Aside from the file I was given, and what I was told, I know bugger all about it here. Obviously.

[Everything is pitch black and quiet. Except for heavy, labored breathing. The rattle of a window being opened follows and two hands can be seen, one normal and the other mechanical. Both sets of fingers grip the sill, a telling sign that their owner is trying not to scream.

Welcome to the after-effects of one of Anakin's nightmares. He has the presence of mind to tug on a shirt, close the window and make his way to another part of the house. The last thing he wanted to do is wake up Padmé.

She has been through enough.

Anakin shivers and wipes at the cold sweater on his brow, hands shaking as he tries to make himself a cup of coffee. His hisses a curse when he drops a cup, causing it to shatter on the floor.

Well that will surely wake her up! Grimacing, he jerks his hand and the individual pieces of ceramic levitate and seem to take themselves to the trash-can. Of course he is directing them.]

Every time I have a dream in this world, it never ends well. [Yeah, nice cover, Anakin.] I guess it's almost time to say... Good morning?

[When the video clicks on, Terry can be seen sitting on a couch with Ace sitting beside him, the large dog's head in Terry's lap. The teen is trying his best to maintain his composure, but the worry all over his face is clear.]

I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone know Matt McGinnis? Could... anyone tell me if he's gone?

[Of course, Terry already knows the truth, that his little brother went home in the two months he apparently missed here, but he doesn't want to believe it.

There's a pause as Terry absently scratches the Great Dane's chin.]

...Probably not the best way to start a video after a two month disappearance, huh? My name's Terry McGinnis, and this here's Ace. We got here about a year ago, and due to some "porter glitch" or something, we've been gone for the past two months apparently. So uh, hi again, I guess.

[Several emotions cycle through his face before Terry plasters on a weak smile.]

If anyone has any good ideas for a distraction right now, I could really use it.

[This video is primarily a response to the slander that just occurred in response to one man expressing a love for a blessed holiday treat. This injustice will not go uncorrected if Peter has anything to say about that. Or well, at least it won't go without a petty filmed response - one filmed in the X-Haus livingroom guru unboxing style.

Peter sets the camera up, stepping back to silently gesture at a large cardboard box he's set down on the coffee table. Using a utility knife he cuts open the tape, parting the flaps and revealing the contents within. Like a sea of orange, white and yellow gold - he holds up a handful and lets the delicate kernels slip through his fingertips with a solid and surveying look and a nod of appreciation.

He then sits down on the couch, pulls both the table and box toward him, and with his eyes dead-set into the camera lens proceeds to eat a handful of candy corn. Thus begins the most Halloween themed mukbang this network has ever or will ever again likely see. He keeps eating. There's no end in sight. And he's going to live stream every last second in beautiful, crisp technicolor.

You can't stop this, nonbelievers. You can't do a single thing to stop this.]

Don't you just freaking love getting in the Halloween spirit? I know I do.

[ Miles' video feed opens on him in his office in Nonah, which is ... honestly pretty wrecked. Someone had a fight in here - and maybe threw some people through some walls - and so there's some temporary drywall put up to patch things up for now. He's working on it, okay. And fortunately he's got the money to just pay for it without pestering the city about such things.

But perhaps more noticeable to people who know him is the empty sleeve pinned up on his left side. He sure is missing an arm all of a sudden. Whoops. ]

I have two requests. The first is - well, I find myself in need of an interior decorator, if there are any so inclined.

[ He gestures at the drywall in his office, the wrecked furniture. A good reason to replace it with something nicer. ]

And the second is ... perhaps a bit of a stretch. But are there any out there with skill in producing prosthetics? I'm told I'll regenerate my limb eventually, but I'd rather have something now, if possible.

I would appreciate anyone who can help on either front. You'll be paid, of course, as I expect either would be a considerable task.

So I have mixed feelings on the whole black light tattoo thing because on the one hand it's cool, sure, but on the other it's a bit - can we say c r e e p y ? was consent a little too hard to ask for? Jeez, if I ever see my mom again she's going to hit me with a dish towel or a broom, and I didn't even get to pick the design. It's like someone gave me a glowstick IV. I feel like I'm going to turn blue soon, turn into a real mutant or something.

You ever stop and wonder why all the mutants and superheroes are kinda blue, anyway? it's such a popular color. I mean, if I could turn a color, I'd choose something a little less mainstream. Am I alone? am I just overthinking this... No offense to any blue friends out there. Guess you can't help who you are or what hue you happen to be. It's just hue you are?

Anyway, the actually important thing I had to say is that I work for a pizza joint here now and I'm not gonna boast but... actually I am going to boast, you ask for Quicksilver for delivery? You'll get that pie faster than you can pull out your change to tip me.

At lot has been happening these past few days it would seem...I would worry that we might be too distracted to notice those among us that have gone, especially has new arrivals make their way here.

I am not sure who all might have known him, but Link--a knight from my world--seems to have been...Ported out of here. I cannot find record of him in any directory so it is the only assumption I can make. There is a...record I have begun to keep, noting those that have been, those that have been Ported out...but I am not so sure that such a record would be of used to anyone at all...It provides to patterns, no answers.

For those of you that have had people close to you leave before you were able...what have you done? It is...I am not sure wat to do with myself now that I am essentially alone in regards to knowing people from home.

[ It's going to be the middle of the night when this video pops up on the network here. There's a redhead in bed, looking exhausted and ~~like she might have been crying~~ like she probably needs some serious sleep as she rubs a hand over her face, fingers brushing through her long red hair in some attempt to get it out of her face. The room's a little dark but it's not impossible to see her thanks to a night light being on nearby. ]

Are you ever happy or I guess... glad when someone goes back and isn't here anymore? I don't really mean someone you hate or whatever but... someone you're close to. It's good they go back, right?

[ She's sounding as though she needs reassurance on that and smiles a little again before she decides to shut this off. ]

First of all, I hate to say this but Calendar Man's ported out. He didn't show up for work, so I did a bit of prowling around [ aka breaking and entering ] and he's not asleep either.

[ But that involves dealing with feelings and acknowledging friends leave and while the Doctor's trying his hardest to get better at that, he still has some issues. Let's not deal with feelings by talking about things instead. There's a chalkboard behind the Doctor and he writes out what he's saying as he talks through his theory. ]

Speaking of the sleeping thing, a proposition: I think I know who caused this.

[ It's taken Jean a couple tries to actually get the hang of this since technology like this doesn't exactly exist in 1983 but... she thinks she's got it, seeing her face appear on the video screen suddenly.

Or at least... she did a couple seconds ago. Now it's gone and left with a black screen?

A little more fiddling and she discovers she accidentally pushed the button to the lock screen on the thing. Getting it back up, there's a redhead looking into the camera now, holding it back some since she feels like it's a little too close. ]

Hi, sorry. [ She smiles a little and gives an awkward sort of wave. Yeah, really cool, Jean. ] Gotta say this is a little weird to be talking into a camera like this.

[ There's a bite to her bottom lip and she glances off camera for a second before she looks back with a sigh, fingers running through her red hair. ]
