Point number two: Just ... think of this as one of those ice-breaking exercises. You know the ones where everybody's awkward and doesn't wanna talk but you gotta answer some stupid question? One of those. Just. Just out of idle curiosity: what is your favorite thing about Earth? It can be anything, doesn't matter how small. In fact, it might be the small things that are the most important. Asking for a friend who isn't used to seeing it so ... intact.

Aaand number three: gimme the skinny on good places to eat around Maurita Falls? Extra points for good ramen joints. And I mean the real stuff, none of that instant business.

A force of cosmic evil called The Darkness swept into the system and wrecked everything.

Cosmic evil. The Darkness. What is it with Earth and attracting all the hokey big bads? I mean, out of all the places, why us, you know?

Mine was the result of a galactic war with some alien empire bent on having their control reach every corner of the known universe.

I dunno, I guess we just like keeping it simple when it comes to naming big bads. I'm sure the Darkness has a fancy title it likes, but I'm not interested in asking for it.

We had an imperial invasion from the Cabal roll through last year. It sucked big time.

I mean, fair. We didn't exactly call the Galra anything other than well the Galra. Can't blame you for not wanting to ask some cosmic evil for naming ideas.

Military-based operations always suck because they know exactly where to hit to make it hurt the most. I've seen it enough on other planets...Cut off a source of morale and bam, cut off inspiration for rebellion, right?

That's pretty much exactly how it went down for us. Man alive ... military societies, am I right? All the same brand of lunkheads, I guess.

Seriously, and the whole fight-fire-with-fire thing that follows? Not so fun. War is messy. Definitely messier than anything a Garrison training sim tried to prepare us for...

That's the thing, training can only get you so far. Sure it helps more than just being chucked straight into the line of fire but no matter what you're going to have to think and fight on your feet.

Probably doesn't help that most of their training was in flight navigation and not actual fire-fights when it came to group exercises. Or that mistakes got dragged out in front of the whole class...

[Yeah, Iverson (wherever you are), he's still bitter about that.]

Doubt more training would have helped. Sometimes you have to get in the middle of it first to really get it.

I can't say we don't have our share of harsh teachers.

Experience can be the harshest teacher though, right? I mean nothing really prepares you for the real deal when we're talking combat.

Precisely. 'Least that's what those harsh teachers I'm thinking of would say.
