['SUP IMPORTS, did you miss this guy? He's giving the communicator a particularly sour expression as he sits out on the front porch of his residence, #14.]

...Well, this sucks.

[He didn't even get to be home an hour, man. At least his injuries are healed again, but jeez........]

Soooo, do I even wanna know what all I missed?

[His tone rather suggests he doesn't; Kotetsu expects something or another has managed to go horribly awry in the month he's been gone--things have been one disaster after another since May.]

Oi Bunny, Judge Petrov, you guys still around? I'm back in #14 if you wanna talk in person or anything.

[......sorry, Ryan, he's only just had five months of memories crammed back into his head and is kind of freaked out about it tbh, he's kind of forgotten about you as the Dude From His Future.]

Uhhh...right. I'm Kotetsu, by the way. If you didn't, ah, know me before. Not that it...doesn't say that on the thing, anyway, but. Y'know. Introductions, n'all...yeah.

Mythology implies that it's a myth, but that's the base of it.

So you think they're real, then...?

[At this point, she can actually manage to hold back the frustrated sigh.]

They're real. They're real as much as I am real.

[The question on his tongue is 'how do you know', but he decides to...actually google it first. Yay for effort? He frowns at the communicator after he does. Lachesis was the name of the other place's Porter, right? And Kanaya had mentioned Atropos as being the one who destroyed that place...]

...So you're saying the Porters are...these Fate goddesses?

The main porter is confirmed to be possessed by Lachesis, who is one of the three Fates.

You're sure it's the--same one? I mean, different worlds, n'all that...there's probably different, uhhh, Lachesis...es....

How can I be sure? I don't come from this world. I only know what I've been told. But I don't doubt the influence of a god-like being in all of this, thanks to everything I've seen before.

[He doesn't like the idea that there's some god-like entity dragging them all out of their worlds to here. That's harder to deal with than malfunctioning technology, which someone could hypothetically fix in the future. But then again, he's already been told the Porter in the previous place was sentient, that it was controlled by some manner of being called Lachesis, and that the world had been destroyed by another such being. So it's not out of the realm of possibility.]

But doubting it all is only going to make you a fool.

[She's not being harsh because she dislikes him. She's being harsh because she's heard this enough times—the noncommittal responses—that they've pushed her to frustration.]

Oi, what's wrong with doubting?? You said you had some doubts about stuff too. Isn't that better than just...blindly accepting that some gods stole us here? 'Cause far as I understand, you don't call something a god unless it's all-powerful. How d'you kick a god's ass?? Maybe it is one and maybe it isn't. I'm not gonna just take the first story I hear and figure that's it. There's too much I gotta get back to for that.

That god has been bringing people from other worlds for over five years now. That god has been at this for a while, and her presence has been confirmed. Are you really gonna look down on someone else's experiences?

I doubt the government's knowledge on the matter—not that a god's involved. If I doubted their involvement, I'd be dead and I wouldn't have done much back home.

I heard she was some kinda freaky sentient machine. The name could be a coincidence, or a world-difference thing.

[He sighs, rubbing a hand at the back of his neck.]

I dunno what you want me to say, Lightning. We don't really have gods where I'm from--or at least, no one can say for sure if we do or don't. That's kinda the whole reason we've got a buncha different religions....

I know that. It's difficult for me to understand, but many other ... unfeasible things happen here, and yet, here we are. It's not a sentient machine, though. There is a being behind it.

[That much has to be made clear. Otherwise, the government's lack of control would make no sense.]

As for what we do, we fight. If necessary. It's not easy for some, but thankfully, there are others like myself here who have experience with gods. The bigger worry is that there might be other gods lying in wait.

There's lots of movies and stuff where robots get intelligent and decide to rebel against humanity or whatever--it doesn't have to be a god.

[SIGHS he doesn't really want to argue with Lightning anymore, though.]

But it could be, I guess.

What's even considered a god where you're from?

[Because the idea that anything less than a god itself could fight a god is not in his current mental definition of 'god', and he's sort of short-circuiting on that point every time.]

[The response comes easily enough. She even sounds less impatient.]

They ... are what they are. When the Maker made the universe, it made the fal'Cie, who then created more fal'Cie, and eventually created humans, as well.

Does that sound god-like to you?

[From her understanding of this world's mythology, anyway, that makes it close.]

No, but movie-like stuff happens all the time 'round here.

[There was that one time that the literal devil raised vampires, werewolves, and zombies to start attacking people??? you can't say that wasn't like a trashy horror flick.]

Kinda. At least, the whole 'making everything' part's pretty standard for a lotta religious stuff, anyway. What's a fal'Cie?

Godly beings. There is the god above all, Bhunivelze, who is not a fal'Cie, but that doesn't make the fal'Cie themselves any less of gods. They are bound by many of the same rules, but they don't necessarily have Bhunivelze's power. The fal'Cie were in charge of many facets of society: food production, the solar force, and even ensuring that nature remained stable. Depending on the world and the region, they often ensured the consistency of the ecosystem, but sometimes things changed.

[Especially if there were no humans around. She chooses not to clarify what she means by "sometimes things changed."]

[It reminds him, a little, of the Kami in the Japanese legends.]

What d'you mean things changed? And how're you supposed to fight something like that, anyway? It sounds like you'd be pretty screwed if you tried to take on things that could do all that...

I caused them to change. Me and my friends ... we fought them, and made the impossible possible. [Her voice is more declarative at this point.] Thanks to their strength, I continued to be able to do that, even if I ... faltered at some points along the way.

...I can't say I get it, exactly, but I'm glad you guys were able to make things better in your world. And I'm sure you'll be able to help make things better here, too.

That's my hope, at any rate.

We're all in this together, right? With so many of us, we've gotta find a way somehow.

I believe that we will together.
