A hero is an imperfect idea, full of good intentions and bad decisions, too many questions and not enough answers. Good people, bad people, it only depends on what side you're on. But I can tell which is which, I've always been able to. There are people here that aren't as good as they say they are, but also those who aren't as bad at they think.

No one really knows who they are. No one wants to.

[ There's a pause. ]

This place seems good for finding out who they are. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I am a private person. That's not a lie. [Private is the nice way to say it, at least. Cagey and emotionally closed-off is more accurate.]

Others who try to imply that I'm lying when I'm not upset me. [His voice is short and clipped, obviously irritated at the question. But it's the one about his family that really gets his hackles up. He's always defensive when it comes to them-- and it doesn't matter that she doesn't know he has family here, it's just an instant reaction regardless.] We're pretty cut from the same cloth on that score, really.
