003. - Book Club!

Alright, so I've suggested this a little to some friends of mine, but I'm thinking about throwing this out a bit wider.

I'm thinking about starting up a book club. Less in the style of book of the month and more organizing one or possibly more groups who can share books or even genres they love most with other people. People would still do the whole guiding discussion but not looking for high end critique so much as just talking about it.

We all need something to unwind and I don't doubt some of us are really fans of reading. I would think the arrangement might work best with members willing to buy their own books. I think for the first few meetings I'd be willing to cook either a simple meal or some finger foods to enjoy, but people could also volunteer to provide food or drinks.


Anyone interested in the idea?

[That really wasn't a thing back home. The idea is inherently awesome and fun, in Lain's opinion. She wants to at least go to one meeting, even if she's not completely sure what will go on there.]

I mean, I might have to tease you for being a lot like Wiccan and Hulkling, but yeah, they count. But you'd have to make your own club.

Will your club be including nonfiction?

[David will respect that. He's known a lot of smart people. Has been smart people. But not on Bean's level.]

If there is call for it, there could be cause for that. Or even a smaller group focused on such. Non-fiction is important. After all, as George Santayana actually said, rather than the common misquote,

'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'

And we don't come here knowing the history.

If you want to save money by going the ebook route, then that works. But mostly yes, the whole actual physical book thing. There's something amazing about holding a real book, Peter.

I'd be interested, depending on the types of books. There's some genres I just can't get into and I'd have to skip those ones, but I'm big on reading and I've never actually had anyone to discuss the books with, so I kind of like this. I can't cook to save my life, but if people don't mind store-bought, I'm fine with contributing, too.

Oh, I'm still soliciting ideas from anyone who wants to share them. Right now it looks like there might be a small call for a side group focused on non-fiction or perhaps historical works. There's definitely a strong sci-fi and fantasy subset going on here too.

It leaves me disappointed that people don't have books from their own worlds to share, though.

Keep in mind that I'm definitely down for reading more than one book at a time, so, honestly, it's all whatever. I'm there already.

I'm definitely getting more than enough feedback to suggest different groups are needed. And you know me, Laurie. I am not having fun unless I'm making color coordinated schedules.

Well, it's going to depend on how many people and how many groups to break down into. I think a public library might be good for rented space if no one has a living room suitable. But it makes bringing food impossible.

Strangely enough, I haven't met as many people here who will at lead admit to liking to cook. I really miss being able to talk about it. But books are lovely too.

There is definitely a number of people looking at non-fiction but there are a few classifications of that. Such as me? All for histories and biographies but not big on autobiographies.
