Even if we do decode the message, what are we going to do with it? What will it mean, if it means anything? Will we be able to do anything with it? Will it be some kind of warning?

Given how everyone is reacting? It's gonna be taken seriously until it's proven to be a hoax. Better to do DEFCON 1 and not need it than DEFCON 5 and be unprepared.
