Where I'm from, our powers tended to manifest themselves as magic-- in fact, the only powers one could have no matter the method was magic. Magic that made you stronger. Magic spells for healing injuries and some illnesses, and even creating those ailments in the first place. Magic solely for combat. Even magic that called for creatures to aid you. It's structured, tiered even, and the more you used what magic you had with you, the more spells you learned and the stronger you became. It comes from within you and in your hands it can have an elemental affinity, if you wanted.

And yet here... it's different. Here, it's not all magic. [Hope pauses to think of how he's going to properly describe what he knows of the powers here. To be honest, he doesn't even know how to do that, so he's just going to give up, since he'll just be asking people to describe their abilities anyway.] It's... well, words fail me, to be honest.

What are your abilities like? What can you do? What are your limitations? If you had them before you arrived here, how did you come by them, and are they any different here?

I hope you don't mind me asking. I'm honestly curious, really, because magic itself is rare and in my youth, the stuff of either legends or fairy tales to scare children into behaving. Here, I imagine, powers could be anything. [And there's a small note of wonder because yes, this is all new and weird, but exciting too.]

I know. The magic I was told about when I was young were of the fairy tale kind. [And that's pretty telling in itself.]

"Magic" is a terms that finds itself unusually broad. You know, funny little tidbits like "I've turned this prince into a frog, that's magic" to "ah, look at that natural occurrence, I'll look upon it fondly and call it magic." The magic of knowledge! The magic of a birthday party!

Perhaps it is one of those things that originated in legends and fairy tales.

It is the same with my world, magic is the source of power. Even us spiritual beings rely on magic to sustain ourselves.

I'm not sure how our own "spiritual beings" sustain themselves exactly, but for us humans, magic is rare enough that we take notice if someone ever did manifest it.

I'm? [She doesn't realize that she outed her, again. She really needs to think over her words before she speaks.]

I see, magic isn't that rare back home. Not all humans can use it but there's enough around that can that it's not that big of a deal.

[It's not a lot of words, but she does sound amused about the choice.]

Well. I. Don't have him anymore. [Hope stop stammering.] And he's still pretty important to me.

We didn't have anything quite like magic where I'm from. [Ellie's voice has a pretty strong British accent to it.] I didn't have any powers before this place. What I have now is...[she pauses for a second while she tries to think of a way to describe it.] hard to acclimate to. It's a sort of empathy, the ability to feel the emotions of other people.

I'm sorry. [And he does mean it. He cant imagine what it must be like, to feel the emotions of other people, especially when his own are problematic enough.]

Is there no way for you to control it?

I wouldn't know much about magic.

[ Which is the truth; she's a street level vigilante, after all. ]

No new abilities then? Not even ones you were granted when you arrived?

I was born with mine, though they didn't start to show up until I was about nine. It's called the Hundred Power--makes me a hundred times stronger and faster and that kinda thing. But only for a couple minutes at a time.

[Three minutes and forty-five seconds, to be exact. The file says they're not going to go down any further, but he's not sure he wants to test that out. He's already used his powers once since arriving--they might already have faded a little bit more.]

How do people come by magic where you're from? Since it's rare, and all. Does it just randomly happen to people, or??

The legends say that magic is forced on people through... supernatural events. I've found this to be correct. [Aaaaactually through fal'Cie giving it to them. But he's not about to admit that.]

However, lately, some people have been manifesting abilities of their own without an outside force, which is unexpected.

I don't know where any of it comes from.

[magic, abilities. He's wondered why he has his own, but never came to any conclusions, and was never brave enough to ask.

... Which is no answer to what Hope is asking.]

You mean you don't know where what you have comes from?

I used to be able to do magic, but my power changed after I got here.

How so? Is it no longer magic?

Mm. It is different. No magic where I'm from that I know of, but if people have powers they do keep them quiet.

[ She pauses. ]

I always wondered how it decides what someone gets.

I cant say for certain about other people, but what I have now is definitely from my world, or at least a copy of the magic from my world.
