I think I've pretty much hit the definition of desperate here, so if I could get some confirmation, that would be great. I got the spiel but I'm...paranoid.

[But mostly, she doesn't want Billy to think the worst of himself. Kate knows her defense is coming on a bit strong, but the last thing he needs is that.]

I find you interesting. [Yes, his TV show, I'll savor that.] I've always found you interesting.

[But maybe in the same way that he finds Alana Bloom interesting, even if she ruins all his schemes like a one woman Scooby Doo crew.]

Isn't that the first word you're taught to avoid in high school essays?

There are quality skills inherent to that endeavor.

And some of those have led them to becoming public officials. [She can admit that much.] But all the praise is a bit much.

I'm getting along just fine with Billy. [Beat.] I don't see you chastising Kate Kane for preemptively dissuading him from immediate access to mental health.

I don't want you to help him. If he wants to seek it, I'd prefer he go somewhere else because of your tendency to do these things in public without holding yourself back. This isn't the first time you've done this. [She is everywhere, and she has a very good memory. A perfect memory. Kate referred to a chance for a reason.]

Kate and Billy were friends before. That's a point in her favor. And she wasn't interested in your little verbal competition.

She wasn't interested because I won. [He has to, he's compelled to say that.] And you're ignoring the outright animosity that Kate Kane maintains for me -- to discount that factor is somewhat naive.

[But nevertheless.]

Billy and I agreed that if he felt he ought to seek my help, he would. That is his decision, don't you think? Eventually we have to take a step back, and allow individuals to take their own risks.

[And there it is, the doubled conversation. Kate is his underlying focus.]

I'm aware of her animosity. [But perhaps not for the reasons that Kate suggested.] I'll have to ask you that story tomorrow. [Because wouldn't that make pleasant dinner conversation? At least they'll be eating beef that tastes like beef.]

Right now, I wouldn't say anyone's making a decision for or against anyone else.

Very diplomatic of you. [It's perhaps the most neutral sentence he had uttered during this exchange, one neither praising nor disparaging.]

But yes, I do anticipate a riveting dinner, conversation and all.

[That, now, is spoken more optimistically.
